    Why News Releases are better than Press Releases for Indie Bands
    Basically, a press release is a simple sheet that provides news and information to editors, dj’s, reporters, music fans and individuals in the press. The main thing to keep in mind is it has to be newsworthy. Make sure it reads like a news release rather than an advertisement. Many bands make the common mistake of adding too much promotional language. Make sure the content is the truth. Let other people say good things about you. Don’t say it about yourself. What’s your angle? Don’t worry – there are LOTS of them.

    If your band donates funds from merchandise or CD sales to Amnesty International, for example, human rights organizations may be interested in distributing your news and even discussing your music with you. This could lead to interviews and more press coverage, but we’re getting off track here. If your band covered a classic Metallica song, well you’d better make sure your press release gets out to all the Metallica fan forums and that you contact all the fan sites and blogs for coverage. Make sure to include your press release in the email.

    Maybe one of the songs on your album is about something controversial. Do you praise or insult a public figure? Maybe one of your songs is a simple homage to small town America.

    There is a market for everything.

    What your music is about will determine the audience who is interested in it.

    Every style has it’s own distributors. In general, you may want to pay a bit for Billboard’s specialized service at www.billboardpublicitywire.com in order to spread your press release. This is a good option for all genres. If you are a metal or heavy rock band, it’s a good idea to submit your press releases to www.blabbermouth.net, for example, because they are highly influential. Once they accept it and you search your press release on Google, you’ll notice within the week that many other metal and similar websites have posted your release as well. If this isn’t actionable for you, simply insert your style and go to it!

    Learn to use Google to your advantage.

    It’s amazing how many bands don’t investigate the leading media, or ‘voices’, in their genre. Google your style along with the word ‘news’ and see what comes up. Start a Microsoft Excel document (or Notepad if you don’t have it) and list all the relevant websites that report rock music news, country news, hip hop news, or whatever. This is your starting point. Want another trick? Try searching the term “submit news” (in quotes) along with “rock music” (or your chosen style). You will find tons of results leading you directly to news submission pages. You can also try terms such as “Send your news here” and “Send news tip”. Keep making slight changes to both the style description and the news submission term and you will get new results. Add the relevant ones to your document as you go. Don’t forget to send that news release as well.

    This is how you start learning shortcuts and work smarter, not harder. As in martial arts, so with music! As long as you keep it newsworthy and relevant, you’re off to a great start getting your music noticed.
