This is a convenient form of technology because those interested in listening to a podcast can do so at a time and place that is convenient for them. To put it another way, listeners can determine for themselves what part of the podcast they wish to receive (especially if it is a long one) and the time that they choose to listen to it.
They can easily be turned into audio archives and by so doing, individuals can listen to them whenever they choose. Thanks to podcasts, gone are the days when if you were not able to listen to something when it was on the radio, you missed it all together, unless it was rebroadcast at a later date.
People who do podcasting are often referred to as podcasters and it is not unusual for a podcaster to find themselves becoming interested in becoming a person who works in radio. Podcasting experience can help you get your foot in the door for sure.
Podcasting allows for the syndication of files and it works in much the same way that a news aggregator or a standard RSS feed reader does. The only difference is an obvious one- the feed that is subscribed comes by way of audio material as opposed to written material.
The content of the RSS feed can easily be listened to on any reader or aggregator as long as it has podcasting abilities. Some people choose to listen to podcasts on the popular iPods while others use something similar to an iPod. Be aware that podcasting was named for the device the iPod, however it is still possible to listen to a podcast without the use of an iPod.
How is that you ask? Podcasts can very easily be brought up on websites that have clickable links for audio types of files and a variety of standard RSS readers, such as the latest beta from FeedDemon which can also support the use of audio files.
What makes a RSS feed a podcast is what is known as the "enclosure tag." To put it the simplest way possible, an enclosure tag is very much like an attachment sent through email.
In a practical sense in our busy everyday world, podcasting can be put to use in a number of different ways. Podcasting can be excellent for music lovers as they can provide interviews with bands and promotional clips to advertise upcoming concerts. Podcasts can be used for informational types of self-guided walking tours and they are the domain of many types of news and talk shows.
But that is not all. Podcasts are excellent for training, both in schools and for companies as they provide educational and instructional material. Podcasts are also beneficial for telling stories to children and/or for those who are visually impaired.
