I wanted to let you know a little about our review teams collective thoughts on music. It's important to let the people we review know what we think of their music and how we listened to their creations.

    The Review

Mike Bauer wasn't finished when he completed Financial Aid Vol. 1 his debut EP so he had to return with Financial Aid, Vol 2. The release of Financial Aid Vol. 1 landed him a gig at the American music festival South by Southwest "SxSW" in Austin, TX, where he played at the House of Creatives. Financial Aid, Vol 2 is full of what I would term Contemporary/Pop with all the standard studio manipulations and the spot on rhythm tracks delivered by computer based production software. What separates this CD from the rest of the "I'm a big boy now" crowd would be the vocals of Mike himself.

Bauer has a signature style that barrows from artists like R. Kelly, Maxwell and Micheal Jackson just to name a few. His timing is spot on and his vocal range is dangerous. Mike Bauer began singing at an early age and grew up in a musically influenced household. He is a multi-instrumentalist (trumpet, piano, guitar, bass) and has been noted for his distinctive voice.

My favorite song from the CD "One Piece At a Time" was nominated in the Best Male Vocal Performance Category. The song also features violinist Vincent Loh. Most recently, a remix by METAPHASE of Bauer's "New Home Team" was featured at the music festival Coachella.

I took off half a point on my near perfect score because the back cover shows a picture of Mike sitting on an amp holding a sunburst Fender telecaster with a very used maple neck. That picture set the expectations for me in motion. I expected some slow blues and a little funk and I got neither. "One Piece at a Time" was about it for the tele.

    In the Studio

This CD was produced by Mike Bauer and Daniel Krieger. The CD was recorded, mixed and mastered at Konscious Studios in Santa Monica. What can I say about a near perfect album? The vocals are sharp and crystal clear. The recording had depth and a degree of warmth without excessive compression. The instruments where all well placed in the sound stage leaving plenty of space for Mike's perfectly executed vocals.

Maybe this CD wasn't what I expected after seeing the back cover but you can't hide the fact that Mike Bauer is the real deal! I would recommend this CD to anyone looking for a taste of fresh contemporary pop with a touch of the old Micheal Jackson swagger. Financial Aid, Vol 2 is a top 10 performance with all the makings of a real world talent.
