I wanted to let you know a little about our review teams collective thoughts on music. It's important to let the people we review know what we think of their music and how we listened to their creations.

We hold nothing back! The team has been instructed to be honest and respectful of all CD's reviewed.

How do you take an EP and turn it into a double album? Team up with 14 various producers and have them remix the songs for you. This is what folk singer turn electronic pop arts producer Jason Garriotte has done with his latest offer Reflections of Reality. Personally, I didn't see the point of remixing this album. The songs are pretty simple in construction and lends themselves well for remixing but I think more time should have been spent on making the original versions sensational so Garriotte could release an amazing album of 10-12 songs and not settle for 26 average remixes.

Garriotte has a wonderful knack for writing catchy tunes, those songs that you hear once and think you have heard it before. Then days later you are still humming the melodies. I think his folk music background had him focus a lot of resources on basic song construction but little thought or attention was given to what could really take the songs to the next level, thus the remix idea. I'm not an expert on remix music but I would have thought one of the other producers would have thought about bringing in additional instruments and adding new levels of musical excitement but none of the producers did much to embellish the songs. While listening I could not help but ask myself, "what would someone like Peter Gabriel, Tangerine Dreams, Kraftwerk or Brian Eno do with this material?" I'm sure they could have turned these songs into epic achievements.

The CD starts off with the song Tune Your Mind" which was repeated 5 additional times on the remixed album. The song was a nice intro tune but not a song to have to sit through 6 different times on one album. This repeat of songs with only minor changes each time began to wear on me after a while. I was longing for a fresh idea and all I got in return was another version of a song I already heard once, twice, three times.

A suggestion might have been to have different vocalists on the remixes or maybe a duet. Garriotte's voice is tuned nicely for folk music but falls a little short in the world of electronica. I have a hard time describing his sound. Vocally Garriotte is a bit nasal and very monotone but he knows his range and stays focused on getting his spiritual message out. His voice is strong in the mix and allows the listener the opportunity to hear and understand his message.

Timing is everything. Had I gotten this CD 6 months ago I may have liked it a lot more then I did during this review session. I have been sent so much stellar material lately that I have been spoiled. Reflections of Reality is an interesting CD but it's not great. The songs were easy to love but how many times can one album support multiple versions of "Tune Your Mind, Listen and Moments?"

On a brighter note...You can click the photo on the right and download 13 songs, various photos and a Bio from the remix album. Click Here and judge for yourself.
