CD title - The Moment When the World Goes....Whut!?
    by Big Water
    Review by Charles Harrelson

Over the years I have been sent plenty of packages from up and coming artist's asking for a review of their latest offering. The packages range from a CD-R and a business card to a legitimate press kit. I must admit, the Big Water package tops them all.

The press kit comes boxed in a square box which houses a CD, a WHUT!? t-shirt and an L.P. Yes, a record! In addition to all the cool goodies in the box was a hand written note from BW himself. I must admit, this was impressive. It was also expensive to put all this together in the hopes of recieving a good review from the music. My first impression was that this artist is serious or he loves to spend money (or both).

Big Water is an artist, educator, producer, songwriter and most of all a singer with a voice like liquid gold. As a one man show or backed by his band, his original music is a gift of heart and soul that blends folk, country, and blues with beautiful melodies and grooving rhythms.

This is Big Water's 4th full length CD called, The Moment When the Whole World Goes...Whut!? Whut is an acrunim for World Human Unanimous Thought.

During the past couple of months I have been reviewing a lot of Alt. Rock, Metal and Avante Garde artist's. These genre's use plenty of compression because so many instruments are occupying the same frequencies. The recordings would be anything but organic. This was not the case with Whut!?. From the opening track the music absolutely exploded with dynamic range, a wide sound stage and crystal clear vocals. BW has a very distinct voice. You would have to seek out folk singer, songwriter Martin Swinger to find a vocalist with a similar singing style. IN FACT, they are more then similar, they are almost carbon copies of one another. A look at other websites compare the BW sound to Darius Rucker, Dave Matthews and James Taylor. I would also add Jackson Brown to this comparision.

This 15 song effort features a full band of 12 talented musicians and friends all coming together to make this simple vision a success. The music offer the listener a little bit of country, add some folk with a taste of slow rock. Once you have all that mixed together you toss in a taste of funk near the end to make the party complete. After listening to the CD a couple times I find myself singing along with a couple tunes. I Hold On was one of my favorites and why I gave BW a comparision to Rock-n-Roll Hall of Famer, Jackson Brown. The song has a thoughtful message and a wonderful melody asking you to sing along.

    The Music:
/  Standing   /  I'll Be Waking You   /  Everything'll Be All Right   /  1,000 Mile Heartache   /  I Hold On   /  Let It Rain   /  Release Me   /  Stop & Boogie Down   /  Relax Your Mind   /  A Day in the Life Of   /

    In the studio
As I stated before, this CD really jumps out at you with dynamics. The use of the traditional guitars and percussion instruments are augmented with lap steel, violins, flute, and steel drums. The recording was pristen with a depth and soundstage equal only to a live performance. The mike placement on all the acoustic instruments was spot on while keeping the main vocals dead center in the sound stage. The recording quality of this CD was as good or better then any major label artist. The studio was a vehicle to record a special event not a tool to add special effects and engineering fireworks.
    Final Comments:

A near perfectly recorded CD played by a bunch of musicians interested in having a good time equals The Moment When the Whole World Goes...Whut!?
I can't wait to fire up the album!
