The Catholic Girls
Founded in the 1980's, the band wore Catholic school uniforms on stage - red plaid, dark green or jet black. Years later, uniforms are all the rage in fashion, on video, in department stores and in the trendoid shops on Melrose Avenue. It’s the 21st Century, and the little-girl look - pouting angel faces with pony tails - is chic in Beverly Hills, South Beach, and London.
The Catholic Girls were four females, friends from high school, who formed their own band, played their own instruments and wrote their own music. No producer, record label or PR genius put this band together.
The band was a cult favorite on the East Coast and opened for well-known acts such as The Kinks and Tom Petty. After their album was released, they headlined a grueling six-month national tour, crowded into a cramped van with all of their musical and amplification equipment, and played to sold-out crowds of from 1,000 to 20,000 every night. They battled club owners, preconceptions, and conservative radio long before girl bands decided to network and help each other out by playing together.
The Catholic Girls were banned by the Archdiocese of Rhode Island, and not allowed to play in that state. Why? The Church proclaimed that their song “God Made You For Me” was sacrilegious and contained a horrifying lyric that “possibly could” be saying God was a woman. Is She? Who knows?
In the Eighties, Gail Petersen became the first public figure to wear a crucifix as an earring, rosary beads as a hair bow, and a St. Sebastian medal as a necklace. (Sorry, Madonna, you set more fashion trends, but only because you had more airplay). Joanne Holland, the bass player, wore gigantic black glasses. (Lisa Loeb, take a back seat, you’re sixteen years too late). The drummer, Kyd Ellsworth, laced her drumsticks with black tape and used them to make the sign of the cross at the finale of their stage show.
The Catholic Girls were into angst, rage, and in-your-face torment long before Alannis or Jewel. Christian mythology, classic movie references, vampires, boys who cry, the dark side, and the references to God are not the sole province of Sarah Mclaughlin or Joan Osborne. On the Catholic Girls’ self-titled album release, Gail Petersen wrote of the very same things with the same urgent, moody, pentatonic point-of-view, and Roxy Andersen played guitar riffs with the same haunting, mesmerizing, panache. This was before it was acceptable for a woman to have “real chops”. The band was danceable but intelligent; cute and playful but also sexy and strong; intellectual but not overly heady; confident without pomposity; vogue without stupidity. They could kick ass, take names, belt out a new song, and say a prayer for you - all at the same time. They could play, write, sing and orchestrate, and everything they did was all theirs.
Sonic Roach Destruction Unit (SRDU)
Sonic Roach Destruction Unit was formed in 1997 by brothers James and David LaRosa. The band gigged extensively in Columbus Ohio from 1998 until July of 1999. The band was known for their powerful lyrics and multifaceted instrumentation to paint powerful thought provoking social comentary. In July of '99 the band split temporarily . Brothers David and James (known then as he & me) released two CD's Soak the Remains 2000 and The Year of the Roach 2001 (little matters records). SRDU started playing again in August 2001 after much encouragemnt from friends. They added part-time sound man and rhythm guitarist Doug Leed. To date they've recorded two CD's, Dead Man's Answering Machine (little matters records) in 1999 that was reviewed favorably in the Columbus Alive.
David Peachey has been living and performing in Brisbane, Australia,
since 1995, yet began his musical odyssey six years before. His style
is best described as ‘Dark Pop-Folk’; a combination of acoustic
creativity plus lyrics drawn from the darker vein of experience.
A multi-talented and self taught musician, David Peachey has written
over one hundred songs, including a musical, and has been described
as similar to Nick Drake, Jeff Buckley, REM, and The Cure.
Fiercely independent, self-taught and versatile, David writes, composes and arranges all his own music, and plays most of the instruments heard on his CDs. Described as similar to Nick Drake, Yes, REM, Coldplay and The Cure, David's recordings transcend his live guitar-and-voice style, often using classical or ethnic instruments such as cello, berimbau and pipa. Even in the more rock-oriented songs, his gentle and often haunting singing shines through.
The Cactus Pears, a self-described post-alternative neo-quirkpop (patent pending) sextet from Athens, Ohio, formed in 1993 when Tony Xenos found other scraggly dudes to make noise. The latest CP incarnation formed in 2007. The comparisons to Menudo are not unfounded, as the band has gone through over 15 members in that time, with people leaving over heated e-mail exchanges or when they turned 13, whichever came first. The band plays regularly in Ohio and has dipped its collective toes into Pennsylvania, New York, West Virginia, Michigan and Kentucky waters on occasion.
The band (see individual bio pages below for trivia and pics suitable for framing) is not-so hard at work on their magnum opus, "B+," which should be in stores before Christ walks the Earth again. In the meantime, keep visiting cactuspears.com for the shallow promise of updates and exclusive material.
