We've Got A Live One Here! CD
      by Commander Cody
    Our Price: $$10.45 cd / $9.99 mp3
    Usually ships in 1-2 days
Recorded during a 1976 U.K. tour, WE'VE GOT A LIVE ONE shows that you don't have to be from the U.S. to appreciate the many forms of American roots music that are part of the Commander's sound. The enthusiastic English crowd eats up the group's unique blend of boogie-woogie, rockabilly, Western swing, and honky-tonk. By this time, the group had been together long enough to hone their arrangements to a fine point, but were still enjoying the last wave of their initial flush of success. Consequently, Cody and company are at their tightest here, but still full of energy and enthusiasm. Clocking in with 19 tracks, this is the longest of the band's many live albums, giving listeners a chance to experience the full breadth of the Commander's varied sound. The well-known tunes like "Hot Rod Lincoln" and "Smoke! Smoke! Smoke! (That Cigarette)" brush shoulders with Bob Wills tunes ("San Antonio Rose," "My Window Faces the South") and classic rockabilly ("Milkcow Blues").

Female Elvis: Complete Recordings 1956-60 CD - Import
      by Janis Martin
    Our Price: $20.79 CD
    Usually ships in 1-2 days
Here's the original wild woman of rock 'n' roll! She signed with RCA two months after Elvis and cut unvarnished rockabilly and rock 'n' roll for the next two years. RCA wasn't kidding when they dubbed her 'The Female Elvis'. Backed by the crack Nashville and New York session men, she cut 26 stellar cuts like Drugstore Rock 'n' Roll, Will You Willyum, My Boy Elvis, Bang Bang, Love Me To Pieces, Ooby Dooby, and Let's Elope Baby.

The only female rocker of the 1950s to blow Wanda Jackson out of the water, Janis Martin earned her moniker as "the female Elvis." The truth in that claim can be heard on this excellent compilation of her complete works, all of which were recorded between 1956 and 1960.
All 26 RCA cuts are here together with a 1960 Palette session that included Teen Street and the honky tonk classic Cry Guitar. One of the Bear Family label's first CDs--and still one of the best!

Robert Gordon With Link Wray/Fresh Fish Specials CD
      by Robert Gordon
    Our Price: $10.99 CD
    Usually ships in 1-2 days
ROBERT GORDON WITH LINK WRAY/FRESH FISH SPECIALS was originally released as 2 seperate LPs. The single compact disc contains 9 additional tracks that did not appear on the original albums.

Rockabilly was pretty much a dead issue as far as American music fans were concerned when Robert Gordon released the two albums featured on this CD, and if he didn't kickstart the revival that would take hold a few years later all by his lonesome, he was certainly carrying the flag at a crucial time. Gordon also gave a major boost to the career of legendary guitar mauler Link Wray, who gets co-star billing on their two albums together, and though Gordon's classical take on rockabilly didn't always mesh with Wray's tough, noisy attack, Wray certainly made the most of his presence here, sounding potent if restrained on the quieter numbers and blowing the roof off when the opportunity knocked.

American Beat's two-fer reissue of these two albums features both in their entirety, but with no bonus materials, which given the fact the two LP's together clock in at less than an hour seems like a wasted opportunity (the Australian label Raven released a two-fer of these albums with a whopping nine extra tunes).

      Sun Rockabilly Meltdown CD
      by Compilation Box Set
    Our Price: $23.49 CD
    Usually ships in 1-2 days
2009 three CD box set that contains 107 absolutely smokin' Rockabilly highlights from the hallowed vaults of Sun Records. The label is acknowledged by fans as being home to the finest Rockabilly sides ever recorded. Anyone who has thrilled to the sounds of Elvis Presley's Sun Sessions is guaranteed to enjoy these recordings. Snapper.

The U.K. Charly label is no stranger to Sun Records, and rockabilly in particular, but they strive to be a little different with SUN ROCKABILLY MELTDOWN, a three-CD, 107-track box released in 2009. Instead of showcasing the most famous R&R hits yet again, each CD is programmed like an afficianado's radio show, featuring such little known but rocking artists such as Tracy Pendarvis, Hayden Thompson, and Malcom Yelvington in addition to less familiar cuts from Elvis, Jerry Lee ("Milkshake Mademoiselle"?), Carl, Johnny, and the rest, including alternate versions and covers of each other's hits, like Charlie Rich doing "Blue Suede Shoes." It's still a thoughtful set overall, not just obscurities for obscurities sake--milestones like "Mystery Train" and "Flying Saucers Rock n' Roll" are here--but the emphasis is definitely on teasing out the unusual and novel in a still-fresh to-be-discovered catalogue.

Record Collector (magazine) (p.83) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[W]ith 70 very acceptable contenders that live up to the superlatives in the title."

Queen Of Rockabilly CD - Import
      by Wanda Jackson
    Our Price: $16.95 CD
    Usually ships in 1-2 days
30 track compilation of singer's 1956-1963 recordings compiled & annotated by Rob Finnis and is the only compilation on the market that concentrates exclusively on her classic rock 'n roll material

Ace Records' Queen of Rockabilly is such a good idea for a Wanda Jackson collection that it's astonishing that it didn't get put together and released until 2000 -- or that Bear Family Records, which is no slouch when it comes to distilling down certain aspects and angles of American country and rock & roll stars, didn't do it first.

It should have been out a lot earlier, in the 1970s -- that would have saved hundreds of listeners (maybe thousands, around the world) having to buy, borrow, or steal her old LPs and singles, so we could isolate and distill down her rockabilly and rock & roll tracks onto open-reel tape or audio cassette. Compiler/annotator Rob Finnis allows the songs to jump across seven years, back and forth, pulling together the strands and threads of this side of Jackson's work into a killer collection of 30 songs, clocking in at less than 70 minutes. And running through the rough and raucous rock & roll sounds is the enigma of Wanda Jackson herself -- this CD touches more musical and cultural buttons than even the man who put it together seems aware of, or than Jackson herself will ever admit to.
Recorded between 1956 and 1963. Includes liner notes by Rob Finnis. Digitally remastered by Duncan Cowell (Sound Mastering Limited).
    Liner Note Author: Rob Finnis.

      No. 1 Cowboy CD
      by Marty Robbins
    Our Price: $8.75
    Usually ships in 1-2 days
Includes liner notes by Chuck Young.
    Personnel: Marty Robbins (vocals, guitar).
    Liner Note Author: C. Young.
Obviously, the main focus of No. 1 Cowboy is Marty Robbins' classic gunfighter ballads and cowboy-themed songs from the '60s '70s.

Originally recorded for Columbia, these 20 tracks have a quality that can't be denied: "Red River Valley," "Streets of Laredo," "Ballad of the Alamo," and, of course, "El Paso" and "El Paso City."

This release from the TeeVee label is fine, but Columbia offers a vast array of solid discs e ncompassing the full spectrum of Marty Robbins hits; these easily available discs provide better sound quality, liner notes, and graphics. ~ Al Campbe
