      Speedball + 11 CD - Import
      by Count Bishops
    Our Price: $12.45 CD
    Usually ships in 1-2 days
In the year or so before punk finally emerged on the London scene, the Count Bishops were the kind of band you wished everyone could sound like - without ever guessing that very soon, they would. A mere handful of other groups shared the Bishops' eye for tanked up, dressed down, dirty-ass R&B - Eddie & The Hot Rods, Little Bob Story, Dr Feelgood and the Hammersmith Gorillas were the closest, and it was a sign of those prime movers' versatility that each of them brought something fresh to the party.

In the Bishops' case, it was a laconic sneer, a greaseball grind and one of the hottest guitarists of the age, Zenon DeFleur. As both writer and performer, he nails even the trickiest riff down flat, for the rest of the band to steamroller. Give him a dumb one and he flattens it himself.

A bonus stacked revision of the band's debut EP, Speedball - like the Bishops' own recorded career - opens with "Route 66," traditionally a staple of every pub band's repertoire, but never, ever like this. A fleet of tanks drives the wrong way down the fast lane, a herd of Hell's Angels careens to meet them, and Mike Spenser sneers the lyric like a man with mayhem on his mind. Not for nothing was he approached by the pre-Rotten Pistols as a potentially suitable vocalist.

The original Speedball EP featured just four tracks, including the similarly superlative "Teenage Letter," a performance which sounds like the Flamin' Groovies if they really were on fire. The eleven extras round up a mass of material which never saw release during the band's own lifetime, but packs a similarly psychotic visceral kick.

Most of the songs are covers; many, additionally, are covers of the covers which the Bishops' British Beat boom heroes were wont to play. The early Stones and Pretty Things positively leer over the track listing, although in terms of gritty nastiness, the Bishops make their bad boy barrage sound like misbehaving choir boys. "Honey I Need" is positively lethal, and "I Want Candy" leaves a nasty taste before it's even been unwrapped.
Overall, Speedball Plus 11 is little more than a glimpse inside the most formative days of the Count Bishops and, in terms of sonics and content, it may leave something to be desired. But like those archive exhumations which scour the Sex Pistols' pre-Bollocks strivings, it has that vibrant, vitriolic vitality which inexperience alone can render realistic - and which history wishes had been recognized at the time. The Bishops have, by and large, been forgotten. This set proves how unjust that is. ~ Dave Thompson

Original Golden Greats/Fifteen Thoughts Of Brinsley Schwarz CD - Import
      by Brinsley Schwarz
    Our Price: $18.79 CD
    Usually ships in 1-2 days
Cleverly, BGO decided to consolidate the two originally-released compilations Original Golden Greats and 15 Thoughts of Brinsley Schwarz onto one disc, eliminating any overlap between the two collections. There are still some terrific songs missing, but it does have the otherwise difficult to find "Run Rudolph Run." This 20-song collection is the best available summary of the group's career. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Digitally remastered edition of 2 original LP's on a single CD.

Brinsley Schwarz: Ian Gomm, Brinsley Schwarz (vocals, guitar); Bob Andrews (vocals, keyboards); Nick Lowe (vocals, bass); Billy Rankin (drums).
2 LPs on 1 CD. Originally released as ORIGINAL GOLDEN GREATS (1974) and FIFTEEN THOUGHTS OF BRINSLEY SCHWARZ (1978).

Brinsley Schwarz/Despite It All CD - Import
      by Brinsley Schwarz
    Our Price: $18.29 CD
    Usually ships in 1-2 days
BGO's two-fer of Brinsley Schwarz's first two albums offers more liner notes than the two-fer available on One Way, and its cover artwork is different, offering miniatures of the two album covers instead of a blown-up version of the debut. Musically, it's nearly the same, with the sole exception being that Despite It All runs before Brinsley Schwarz. So, it's a tradeoff -- if you want historical accuracy without documentation, pick One Way; if you want the notes, pick BGO. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

All 16 tracks the band recorded, taken from their 1981 LP Are You All Mine?, a few non-LP singles, and the previously unreleased "I Told You So." "Go Go Go," with Paddy Maloney on Uilleann pipes, is the clear highlight. ~ Richie Unterberger

    Arranger: Albania.

Personnel: Bob Strain (guitar); Paddy Moloney (Uilleann pipe); Andy Hamilton (saxophone); Nick Ash (keyboards).

      Cruel To Be Kind CD
      by Brinsley Schwarz
    Our Price: $15.55 CD
    Usually ships in 1-2 days
Fronted by singer/songwriter Nick Lowe, Brinsley Schwarz were pioneers of the 1970s so called 'Pub Rock' movement. This is the second volume of the band's BBC recordings and features the best of their live and studio sessions from 1971-75, as compiled by Brinsley Schwarz. All of these recordings are previously unreleased, and seven titles have never been released before in any form. The booklet features liner notes by members of the band and John Peel.

Cruel to Be Kind is the second installment of Brinsley Schwarz's BBC recordings released by Hux, following What IS So Funny About Peace Love & Understanding? by three years. This gathers most, but not all, of the BBC performances that didn't make the first volume, following the same mix-and-match sequencing as that collection, so sessions from 1971 alternate with those from 1973 and songs from a particular session are split up. Some collectors may complain about such non-chronological sequencing, yet it's ultimately nitpicking, since the chosen track sequence gives the collection momentum as an album, not as a concert.

It's simply a joy to have this material officially released, since it captures the Brinsleys at a peak, whether it's on the laid-back roots rock that comprises the first two-thirds of the record, which is primarily material from Nervous on the Road and earlier, or the poppier songs from Please Don't Ever Change to their disbandment in 1975. While the first part of the album is excellent, it's fairly familiar, similar in tone and feel to the BBC sessions on the first Hux collection (sometimes they're even culled from the same date), with the only surprise being a nice, relaxed 1973 cover of Chuck Berry's "You Never Can Tell" and the previously unreleased, wonderfully titled "Do the Cod (The Thirty Pounder)," an enjoyable instrumental. What's really noteworthy is the final stretch of the album, which contains no less than four newly released Brinsley songs (three of them previously unheard) and a dynamite, shambolic cover of the J. Geils Band's "Wait." This constitutes the missing link between the pub rock of Brinsley Schwarz and the rowdy, new wave rocker of Nick Lowe's Jesus of Cool -- songs that grew from the laid-back rock & roll roots of pub rock, but are filled with shiny, clever pop hooks, witty words, and a wild, slyly subversive spirit.

Chief among these is the first version of "Cruel to Be Kind," which later became Lowe's biggest hit, here taken a little faster with Bob Andrews' careening organ taking a prominent role, but not far behind is the deliriously catchy "We Can Mess Around With Anything But Love," which could have easily fit onto Labour of Lust, and "Give Me Back My Love," a delightful fusion of the ringing guitars of the British Invasion and the trashy organ-fueled sound of the Sir Douglas Quintet.
These songs, along with the other unheard original, "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me," help make Cruel to Be Kind more than just another collection of BBC recordings, and turn it into necessary listening for fans of straight-ahead rock & roll and pure pop. It's terrific. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

      Live Vandelay CD - Import
      by Graham Parker
    Our Price: $15.85 CD / $9.99 MP3
    Usually ships in 1-2 days
The often-bootlegged Graham Parker album THE OFFICIAL ART VANDELAY TAPES: LIVE ONE finds the singer-songwriter onstage in Chicago in 1988.

The ART VANDELAY TAPES (named after a SEINFELD character) are Graham Parker bootlegs made legitimate. \Two other volumes exist, which are filled with a hodgepodge of rare material from over the years, but this collection instead features a Parker show recorded in Chicago in 1988 in support of the album THE MONA LISA'S SISTER. A number of tracks from that release are tackled here, along with Rumour-era Parker classics like "Howlin' Wind" and "White Honey," and Parker lends his characteristic soulful snarl to it all in commendable fashion.

2009 repressing. The beloved Live Vandelay Tapes finally sees an official release and contains what has to be one of Graham Parker's finest ever shows, recorded on Independence Day in Chicago 1988. Fourteen searing tracks of Parker's greatest material are featured on this classic concert compilation. Also included are two bonus tracks 'You Hit The Spot' and 'No More Excuses'. Lemon.
    CD contains 2 bonus tracks.
