Those Whom The Gods Detest CD
      by Nile
    Our Price: $12.78 CD
    Usually ships in 1-2 days
It's hard to not be impressed by the sheer sonic onslaught that is otherwise known as Nile. Except to the most hardened death metal fanatic, the genre has a way of sounding the same after a while, but Nile is one of the few exceptions -- able to put their own unmistakable fingerprints on this heavy duty style (Egyptian-influenced lyrics and musical bits, highly impressive instrumental dexterity, etc.). And on their sixth studio effort overall, 2009's Those Whom the Gods Detest, Nile has once again proven that they are a step ahead of the rest of the pack. Although some of the sonic depth has to be attributed to producer Neil Kernon (after all, he worked with such sticklers for audio perfection as Queensr˙che in the past), it's the true metallic fury that Nile create themselves that makes it all extremely impressive. Case in point, such delicious death metal ditties as "Kafir!," while on selections such as the title track and what's sure to be top metal song title of 2009, "Yezd Desert Ghul Ritual in the Abandoned Towers of Silence," Karl Sanders shows why he is considered by many to be the finest guitarist of the extreme metal genre (both songs incorporate Sanders' love of all things Middle Eastern). "Exotic" and "heavy metal" are not often terms used together, but in the case of Those Whom the Gods Detest, they go together as splendidly as peanut butter and jelly. ~ Greg Prato
2009 release from the Egyptian themed extreme death metal outfits, their second for the Nuclear Blast label. 9 tracks

      South Of Heaven CD
      by Slayer
    Our Price: $8.49 CD / $9.90 MP3
    Usually ships in 1-2 days
With 1986's REIGN IN BLOOD, Slayer reached the pinnacle of its rapid-fire, speed metal style. For the band's next effort, instead of embracing its hardcore roots even further, the band retraced its metal influences, namely Black Sabbath. 1988's ... Full DescriptionSOUTH OF HEAVEN surprised many fans because it contained several mid-paced, dirge-like compositions that spotlighted metal's crunch over punk's reckless energy. Tom Araya's lyrics still addressed controversial subjects, while another piece of gruesome artwork graced the album's cover.
,br> The twin-guitar team of Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman is again well equipped with an arsenal of killer riffs, while drummer Dave Lombardo shows why many consider him to be one of metal's all-time best. In the past, Araya penned lyrics that dealt with such controversial topics as Nazism (REIGN IN BLOOD's "Angel of Death") and serial killers (SEASONS IN THE ABYSS's "Dead Skin Mask"). Araya continues the trend on SOUTH OF HEAVEN with "Silent Scream," a track about abortion. Other gory tracks include the grinding title track, "Mandatory Suicide," and a cover of Judas Priest's "Dissident Aggressor."
Despite it all, Slayer's ardent following embraced the album, eventually propelling SOUTH OF HEAVEN to gold-certification in the U.S.

Twilight Of The Thunder God CD
      by Amon Amarth
    Our Price: $12.15 CD
    Usually ships in 1-2 days
The modern barbarians of Amon Amarth are dedicated to mining their native Sweden's Viking past for tales of battle glory and eternal feasting that they can build into their colossally melodic death metal. Their seventh album, TWILIGHT OF THE THUNDER GOD, makes plain its mission from the album cover, featuring the Mighty Thor wielding his mystic hammer against a giant dragon. The music itself bludgeons the listener just like that warhammer, with sturdy songs like "Guardians of Asgaard" pounding out a brutal mid-tempo beat, and "Twilight of the Thunder God" spinning a power-metal influenced web of twisting guitars and jackhammer drums.

Kerrang (Magazine) (p.48) - "[E]very one of the 10 tracks here hits you like a runaway longboat and gets better with every listen."
Kerrang (Magazine) (p.64) - Ranked #4 in Kerrang's Best Albums Of The Year 2008 -- "[A] strong clap of heavy metal thunder."
This DVD/CD includes a 24 page full color booklet. The CD includes 10 songs. The DVD includes 13 tracks filmed at Summer Breeze 2007.

      Great Cold Distance CD
      by Katatonia
    Our Price: $16.19 CD
    Usually ships in 1-2 days
Coming three full years after 2003's Viva Emptiness, The Great Cold Distance continues the trend toward the mainstream that Katatonia began with that album. Singer Jonas Renske -- who apparently lost his ability to do the now-clichéd Cookie Monster vocals some years ago due to medical problems -- has refined his voice into a much smoother and, surprisingly, more powerful instrument that's capable of greater emotional shadings. Similarly, this album forsakes the blastbeats and hyperspeed riffing for a more dynamic sound that makes smart use of slow and quiet passages. They're still heavy: "Deliberation" and "Leaders" are as brutal as anything on the band's career high point, Last Fair Deal Gone Down. But that heaviness is set off by gems like the surprisingly restrained "In the White," a powerful and heartfelt song that's among the band's finest, and that sonic variety makes The Great Cold Distance a stronger, more compelling listen than a more bludgeoning effort would be. ~ Stewart Mason

The band is back with their 7th CD of the original album plus 2 bonus tracks, plus a DVD-Audio containing the album remixed into stunning 5.1 surround sound. The album marks the latest leg of the journey for a band that truly has gone the great cold distance, progressing through the out and out crushing doom metal leanings of their early albums through the all-rock spectrum of their most recent offerings.

      Covenant CD
      by Morbid Angel
    Our Price: $8.69 CD / $9.90 MP3
    Usually ships in 1-2 days
Covenant started to bring Morbid Angel up out of the underground, as MTV gave them wider exposure on its late Headbanger's Ball. Guitarist Trey Azagthoth plays complicated, heavily detuned riffs, some with a lightning-fast picking style and others in a slower groove. Drummer Pete Sandoval is one of the genre's fastest, and his jackhammer style helps complete Morbid Angel's core sound. Their incredible chops and nonstop intensity may be exactly what you've been looking for, or you may find the lack of variation wearisome. ~ Steve Huey

Personnel: David Vincent (vocals, bass guitar); Trey Azagthoth (guitar, keyboards); Pete Sandoval (drums).

      Walpurgis Rites: Hexenwahn CD
      by Belphegor
    Our Price: $12.78 CD
    Usually ships in 1-2 days
Long-running Austrian death/black metal band Belphegor are masters of track and album titles. Previous discs have sported names like BONDAGE GOAT ZOMBIE, PESTAPOKALYPSE VI, and LUCIFER INCESTUS, with songs like "Belphegor -- Hell's Ambassador,"Sexdictator Lucifer," and "Demonic Staccato Erection." This new disc includes such life-affirming anthems as "Hail the New Flesh," "Veneratio Diaboli -- I Am Sin," and "Enthralled Toxic Sabbath." This album is also as good an introduction to Belphegor as any of their earlier releases.

    Lyricists: Hecate; Belphegor; Helmuth.
Personnel: Helmuth (guitar, sampler); Andy Classen (sampler).
    Audio Mixer: Andy Classen .
Recording information: Stage One Studios, Kassel, Germania (01/2009-07/2009).

      New Reign CD
      by Born Of Osiris
    Our Price: $10.99 CD / $7.59 MP3
    Usually ships in 1-2 days
On its 2007 debut, THE NEW REIGN, the Chicago-based extreme-metal band Born of Osiris unleashes a fierce aural assault. While the group sports demonic vocals, bludgeoning guitar riffs, and rapid-fire rhythms, it also indulges in the occasional nmelodic, prog-influenced keyboard line (see "Open Arms to Damnation"), making it an intriguingly unpredictable act.

      World Painted Blood CD
      by Slayer
    Our Price: $17.57 CD
    Usually ships in 1-2 days
Of the "big four" original thrash bands (the other three being Metallica, Anthrax, and Megadeth), Slayer was the least compromising and most consistent. As such, 2009's WORLD PAINTED BLOOD recalled more than the title of Slayer's 1986 masterpiece REIGN IN BLOOD; it shared the earlier album's ferocious aggression and trademark speed metal-meets-hardcore sound. T hroughout, the sound is lean and mean, with bassist/vocalist Tom Araya's vocals mixed relatively dry and upfront, giving the album a bracing, fist-to-the-face force.

Jackhammer tracks such as "Hate Worldwide" and "Psychopathy Red" are short, no muss-no fuss blasts of double kick drum, minor key-riffing fury, with an unrelenting intensity that requires little in the way of sonic or textural variation.

The title track, on the other hand, is a somewhat slower dose of classic chugga-chugga head-banging which showcases Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman's shrieking, emotive guitar work.
Remaining true to Slayer's defiantly old school sound, WORLD PAINTED BLOOD carried the torch for pure thrash.

      Among The Living CD
      by Anthrax
    Our Price: $21.94 CD
    Usually ships in 1-2 days
When Anthrax released AMONG THE LIVING in 1987, the band was a part of a then-burgeoning heavy metal sub-genre called speed or thrash metal. This was an inversion of glam metal. The band members wore worn-out jeans and T-shirts, their long hair was hairspray-free, and not a smudge of make-up was applied to their unsightly mugs. Their music was dense, borrowing speed from punk and hardcore and mammoth guitar riffing from metal, and featured thought-provoking lyrics. AMONG THE LIVING not only served as Anthrax's commercial breakthrough, but (along with seminal releases by Metallica, Megadeth, and Slayer) the album brought this new musical form to the forefront.

The members of Anthrax were a bunch of comic-book-reading, jam-wearing heavy metal fans from NYC, and the music reflects the lifestyle. The band based it's U.K. Top-30 hit single "I Am the Law" on a favorite comic-book character (Judge Dread). "Imitation Of Life," a song about phony people that contains one of thrash metal's strongest riffs, was pointedly directed at '80s glam metal bands. The frantic "Caught In A Mosh" is an album highlight, as are "Indians" (which deals with the plight of the Native American), "N.F.L.," "Skeletons In The Closet," and the title track.
Anthrax: Joe Belladonna (vocals); Dan Spitz (acoustic & electric guitars); Scott Ian (guitar); Frank Bello (bass); Charlie Benante (drums).
Personnel: Joey Belladonna (vocals); Dan Spitz (guitar); Frank Bello (bass guitar); Charlie Benante (drums).
