Super Session CD
by Mike Bloomfield / Al Kooper / Steve Stills
Our Price: $6.75 CD / $9.99 MP3
Usually ships in 1-2 days
A surprise best-seller when it was first released, this mostly improvised pairing of
singer/keyboardist/producer Al Kooper with two major guitar heroes of the day sounds
fascinating all these years later precisely because of the distance of
time--nobody makes records like this any more. The material runs the gamut from folk pop (covers of Donovan and Dylan), to blues ("Albert's Shuffle," "You Don't Love Me"), to heady jams ("His Holy Modal Majesty"), to big-band jazz ("Harvey's Tune").
All the tunes make effective templates for the kind off-the-cuff music-making that in less capable hands might have resulted in simple noodling. In fact, although Bloomfield and Stills don't play together on any of the cuts (Bloomfield played on one side of the original LP, Stills on the other), all three principals get off lots of good licks and producer Kooper has some interesting tricks up his sleeve, as in the over-the-top phasing he lavishes on "You Don't Love Me." The only real disappointment here is that Stills, a far better singer than Kooper, never opens his mouth.
Those familiar with the Live Adventures album these two recorded at the Fillmore West know how brilliant they could be on stage, and here's another gem, recorded at the Fillmore East this time and featuring 'One Way Out,' 'It's My Own Fault' (with Bloomfield trading licks with Johnny Winter...Johnny was signed to Columbia after this gig!). Newly remastered & now with 4 bonus tracks, 'Albert's Shuffle' (2002 Remix w/o Horns), 'Season of the Witch.' (2002 Remix w/o Horns), 'Blues For Nothing' (Studio Outtake) & 'Fat Grey Cloud' Previously Unreleased Live Track). Features 12-page booklet with unpublished photos from the recording session, new liner notes by Al Kooper & the Rolling Stone Hall Of Fame review by David Fricke. 60 scintillating minutes! 13 tracks. Colunbia/Legacy. 2003.

Ella In Hollywood CD
by Ella Fitzgerald
Our Price: $55.98 CD
Usually ships in 1-2 days
Originally released on Verve Records in 1961, ELLA IN HOLLYWOOD is a straightforward
collection of 12 familiar standards mostly given very simple, pop-oriented arrangements.
Songs tend to run well under four minutes (a gently swinging "Just
In Time" clocks in just under two), with only a minimum of room for Fitzgerald to
break into her legendary scatting. The main exception is the centerpiece track, a
nine-minute take on the Duke Ellington standard "Take the A Train," that gives
Fitzgerald ample room to stretch out vocally. Although fans of her scat work might
be somewhat disappointed by this mainstream set, ELLA IN HOLLYWOOD serves to remind
just how gifted a stylist Fitzgerald was in the pop genre as well.

Kind Of Blue CD
by Miles Davis
Our Price: $6.25 CD / $9.99 MP3
Usually ships in 1-2 days
KIND OF BLUE was the ultimate fulfillment of this approach, with Miles providing his
collaborators little more than outlines for melodies and simple scales for improvisation.
By emphasizing the blues and the improvisor's melodic gifts, KIND OF BLUE precipitated a
major stylistic development--modal jazz.
Charles Mingus had experimented with pedal points throughout the 1950s, and the melodic
freedom of Ornette Coleman's Atlantic sides was also predicated on freedom from chord
changes. But KIND OF BLUE was to prove the most influential, enduring work of its kind.
There was just such a vibe about these 1959 sessions--Miles' lyric genius and
burgeoning stardom, the innovative voicings and rarefied touch of pianist Bill
Evans, the electrifying presence of Coltrane and Cannonball--that some thirty-plus
years after its initial release, KIND OF BLUE is still recognized as Davis' point
of departure towards jazz's less-explored regions.
With BIRTH OF THE COOL, Miles Davis distilled a new tonal palette for jazz.
As early as 1954, Miles reacted to the escalating chordal complexity of hard
bop by fashioning an evocative blues based on a simple scalar pattern ("Swing Spring").

Nothing But The Best CD
by Frank Sinatra
Our Price: $15.65 CD
Usually ships in 1-2 days
"The Chairman of the Board" died in May of 1998, yet his music sounds as vital and
relevant today as ever. Released on the 10th anniversary of his death--in coordinatio
n with a slew of DVD releases commemorating the singer's acting career as
well as an official U.S. Postal Service stamp--NOTHING BUT THE BEST provides
an excellent look at Sinatra's tenure at the Reprise label. Among the album's 22
vintage cuts are classics such as "The Way You Look Tonight," "Luck Be a Lady,"
"Strangers in the Night," and "My Way." The disc also contains a bonus track in
the previously unreleased recording of "Body and Soul." Diehard Sinatra fans will
likely own most of this material, yet as a greatest hits set (albeit covering
the Reprise years only) NOTHING BUT THE BEST lives up to its title.
Audio Mixers: Larry Walsh; Terry Woodson; Charles Pignone.

Quiet Nights CD
by Diana Krall
Our Price: $13.69 CD / $10.89 MP3
Usually ships in 1-2 days
Diana Krall's first studio outing since she and husband Elvis Costello became the proud
parents of twin boys, 2009's QUIET NIGHTS finds the jazz singer/pianist turning in a
serene and pleasantly subdued set. Krall breezes through a few bossa
nova standards, most notably "The Girl from Ipanema" (here gender-reversed to "The Boy
...") and the title track (originally "Corcovado"), both penned by the legendary Antonio
Carlos Jobim. QUIET NIGHTS isn't solely a Brazilian-themed outing, however, as Krall
also spends plenty of time in the comfortable realm of the Great American Songbook,
offering up elegant orchestral renditions of "I've Grown Accustomed to His Face"
and the Bacharach/David gem "Walk On By" that benefit from her supremely smoky vocals
and graceful delivery.

Twist Of Motown CD
by Bob James
Our Price: $11.39 CD / $9.99 MP3
Usually ships in 1-2 days
There's a scene in Oliver Stone's 1986 film Platoon that speaks volumes about the importance of Motown Records to the baby boomer generation.
In that scene from Platoon -- which takes place in the jungles of Vietnam during the Vietnam War -- several American soldiers are singing
the Miracles' "The Tracks of My Tears" in an effort to provide some temporary relief from the horror that surrounds them. During that scene,
the song is about much more than a great melody -- it's about camaraderie, solace, and comfort. Like the Beatles, the Rolling Stones,
James Brown, and Stax, Motown was -- to use Berry Gordy's phrase -- "the sound of young America." While the baby boomers aren't so young
anymore, the Motown songbook holds up nicely after all these years -- a fact that is illustrated by A Twist of Motown. This 2003 project
finds guitarist Lee Ritenour producing a jazz-friendly tribute to Motown and overseeing an all-star cast that includes George Benson,
Gerald Albright, Dave Grusin, Chris Botti, and Bob James, among others. The instrumentals (which range from "I Heard It Through the
Grapevine" to Stevie Wonder's "Creepin'") tend to draw on both soul-jazz and crossover jazz/NAC, while the vocal performances --
including Brenda Russell on "The Tracks of My Tears" and Will Downing on "Just My Imagination" -- are aimed at urban or quiet storm
listeners. From a jazz standpoint.
A Twist of Motown isn't as adventurous or risk-taking as it could have been; if you want to hear
some truly daring interpretations of Motown gems, check out Joe Farrell's version of Wonder's "Too High" or Grover Washington, Jr.'s
arrangement of Marvin Gaye's "Inner City Blues." Nonetheless, the performances -- both instrumental and vocal -- are generally likable
and satisfying, and when all is said and done, Ritenour has affirmed how durable the Motown songbook continues to be. ~ Alex Henderson
