70th Birthday Concert CD
by Duke Ellington
Our Price: $20.55 CD
Usually ships in 1-2 days
http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?pid=
Each of Ellington's brilliant sidemen, including Cat Anderson, Cootie Williams, Johnny Hodges, Harry Carney,
and the great Paul Gonsalves, gets his own solo spotlight, but as always with the Ellington Orchestra, the real treat is hearing so
many great talents working together under the direction of the finest arranger/composer in jazz history. As usual, Ellington's most
popular tunes, from "Prelude to a Kiss" to "Caravan," are squeezed into one 16-minute medley, one that is performed with joy and grace.
Recorded at Manchester, England's Free Trade Hall on November 26, 1969 (actually almost seven months after Duke Ellington's 70th birthday),
this legendary concert captures one of the final lineups of Ellington's touring band performing a retrospective program that touches on
all eras and styles of the composer's long and prolific career. Included here is everything from timeless early Cotton Club classics
like "Rockin' in Rhythm" to later, more complex compositions like "Black Swan."
Recorded live at Colston Hall, Bristol, England on November 25, 1969 and Free Trade Hall, Manchester, England on November 26,
1969. Includes original liner notes by Derek Jewell.

Definitive Collection CD
by Louis Armstrong
Our Price: $11.99 CD / $10.89 MP3
Usually ships in 1-2 days
This extensive compilation of vocal tracks from the latter part of Louis Armstrong's career features many of his most popular performances,
including the 1960s hits "Hello Dolly" and "What a Wonderful World," and his wonderfully relaxed duet
with Bing Crosby on "Gone Fishin'." However, even on these more commercially slanted songs, the trumpeter's legendary musical skill is
apparent--his soaring solo on "Dolly" effortlessly cruises the instrument's upper registers, and his vocal interpretation of "Mack the
Knife" is a masterpiece of jazz singing.
Personnel: Louis Armstrong (vocals, trumpet); Ella Fitzgerald (vocals); Perry Botkin, Bud Scott (guitar); Kid Ory, Tyree Glenn (trombone);
Billy Kyle (piano); Red Callender, Arvell Shaw (bass instrument); Barrett Deems (drums).

New Orleans Piano - Blues Originals, Vol. 2 CD
by Professor Longhair
Our Price: $10.89 CD / $9.99 MP3
Usually ships in 1-2 days
Professor Longhair is the fountainhead of New Orleans R&B, and NEW ORLEANS PIANO is one of the style's essential documents.
It contains recordings 'Fess made for Atlantic in the late 1940s/early '50s, some of his finest sessions. This collection wasn't released until
1972, but it surely had a profound effect on every young pianist who heard it; on Longhair's signature song, "Tipitina," and others, the piano
king's loose-limbed, rolling piano lines, organically polyrhythmic second-line grooves, and rough, quirky vocals add up to a jubilant, seamless
style that's simultaneously vibrant and unhurried. 'Fess's trademark whistling atop the insistent piano figure of "Mardi Gras in New Orleans"
remains one of the most vivid sonic evocations of party time in the Crescent City.

Jazz Ultimate/Coast Concert CD
by Bobby Hackett
Our Price: $13.85 CD
Usually ships in 1-2 days
Coast Concert/Jazz Ultimate collects two of Bobby Hackett's mid-'50s albums on one CD. Coast Concert from 1955 features Hackett live
with old friend Jack Teagarden on a selection of lively Dixieland standards such as "Basin Street Blues," "Fidgety Feet," and "Royal Garden Blues."
Jazz Ultimate from 1957 reteams Hackett and Teagarden for a similarly themed studio set, from which "Way Down Yonder in New Orleans," "Oh Baby," and
"'S Wonderful" are some of the highlights. An appealing two-fer that highlights one of Hackett's most successful collaborations. ~ Heather Phares

Great Paris Concert CD
by Duke Ellington
Our Price: $10.59 CD
Usually ships in 1-2 days
Stanley Dance's detailed and informative liner notes clarify, there were actually four Paris concerts from which this material was drawn.
There's an abundance of material on this two-CD set, 30 cuts in all, and it's a luxurious trip through the Duke's
extensive repertoire. Ellington was a pro at balancing his audience's desire to hear his classics with his own need to continue composing
and presenting new material. So while we get recent (for 1963) creations like "Suite Thursday" and "Theme From The Asphalt Jungle'" we
also get to hear the band travel back 30 years or more to reprise some of the original "jungle sound" compositions like "Black And Tan
Fantasy," "Creole Love Call" and "The Mooche." This particular incarnation of Ellingtonians is alive and kicking.
Duke can be heard
hollering encouragement to his men from behind the piano, flirting with the audience (he's not going to tell them the title of the
next piece, he explains, because "you're so hip"), and announcing such featured performers as Johnny Hodges, Cootie Williams and Paul
Gonsalves. All this, and great sound quality to boot.

Complete Library Of Congress Recordings By Alan Lomax CD
by Jelly Roll Morton
Our Price: $84.59 CD
Usually ships in 1-2 days
Jelly Roll Morton liked to claim he invented jazz, and while the claim is clearly a self-aggrandizing overstatement,
there is plenty of evidence that his innovations defined the genre in essential ways. THE COMPLETE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS RECORDINGS, a mammoth,
lavishly packaged 8-disc box set, contains heaps of evidence to that effect.
Supervised by Alan Lomax, these recordings were made in 1938, well after Morton's reign as a jazz giant. Still, the sessions amount to nothing
less than an anthropological study--not only of Morton and his music--but of the dawn of jazz itself. Morton's Dixieland piano playing is
still in fine form here, and his superb songs, the structures and sound of which shaped the genre, are as smart as ever. But the real treat
here is Morton's spoken word segments: the artist recounts his heyday with a vividness and charm that is priceless. Add to these qualities
excellent sound and impeccable packaging, and the set becomes one of the most valuable oral and aural documents concerning the history of
American pop music available.
Personnel: Jelly Roll Morton (vocals, piano); Leonard Bechet, Paul Dominguez, Jr., Albert Glenny (spoken vocals); Johnny St. Cyr (guitar);
Alphonse Picou (clarinet).
THE COMPLETE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS RECORDINGS comes packaged in a piano-shaped box and includes two soft-bound books; a biography by
Alan Lomax, and an 80-page book with rare photographs.

Fundamental Roll/Not Shy CD
by Walter Egan
Our Price: $16.09 CD
Usually ships in 1-2 days
Walter Egan's big hit, "Magnet & Steel," was issued on his Not Shy album in 1978, his sophomore effort. It was the only chart score
he ever had. That said, this two-fer reissue of Egan's first two offerings is a solid chapter in the California pop/rock canon of the
1970s. History is kind in its view here, because Egan's own songwriting is top-notch, and having Lindsey Buckingham as a producer --
with backing vocals from Stevie Nicks on both albums -- couldn't hurt either, since this was Mac's prime era. These are solid outings,
the groove quotient is high, the vibes are warm and sunny, and the attitude is perfect -- with a fine balance between sweetness and
swagger. Other standouts include "She's So Tough," "Surfin' & Drivin'" (with Dean Torrence from Jan & Dean), and "When I Get My Wheels." ~ Thom Jurek
Walter Egan was first famous for the song "Hearts On Fire" which he wrote with Tom Guidera and was recorded by Gram Parsons and Emmy
Lou Harris on the LP "Grievous Angel".He was signed to Columbia Records in 1977 and released "Fundamental Roll", his first LP. It was
produced by Fleetwood Mac's Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks (as well as himself). They also played and sang on the record. "Not
Shy" was released in 1978 and also featured the participation of the Fleetwood Mac luminaries. The million-selling gold record
"Magnet and Steel" was the center piece of this record.
Through the years Walter has performed with Linda Ronstadt, Jackson Browne,
Jules Shear, Wanda Jackson, the band Spirit and Randy and the Rainbows.Walter continues to write and perform in Nashville Tennesee,
as well as pursuing a career as a painter and a sceenwriter.
