Songs From The Heart: Ramsey Plays Ramsey CD
      by Ramsey Lewis
    Our Price: $14.55 CD / $9.99 MP3
    Usually ships in 1-2 days
Ramsey Lewis is not only thriving in his golden years, but continues to refine his approach within the tried-and-true piano-bass-drums trio format. Alongside his longtime bandmates featuring the very talented bassist Larry Gray and drummer Leon Joyce, Lewis has chosen to present an all-original program inspired by his collaborative concert stage work with the Joffrey Ballet Company, or the Turtle Island String Quartet. With elegance, panache, and a little bit of soul, Lewis and his group breeze through these selections, and while the pianist has his own approach to shadings and lyricism, there's no doubt he is also reflecting the muse and sage wisdom of another great jazz player who made his mark in Chicago, Ahmad Jamal. Lewis crafts lovely themes shaded in little or no drama via the light bossa nova dance traipse of "Touching, Feeling, Knowing," the easygoing contemporary funk of "The Spark," or the tango, soul-jazz inflected "The Way She Smiles."

Not all laid-back, the trio is led by the irrepressible Gray, who pushes through "Exhilaration" all the way through, runs through an ostinato bassline on the driving, Brazilian, Jamal-styled beats of "Rendezvous," and uses a bouncy, hip, 6/8 mode for the classy, bouncy "To Know Her Is to Love Her," accented by the chiming piano of Lewis. While the backbone of these recordings is the sophistication of the piano player in the ensemble tracks, there are four solo pieces that further illuminate this grand dame concerto concept. "Clouds in Reverie" perfectly reflects its title, "Conversation" is an elegiac, epic, musical love tale in the class of "Exodus" or "Spartacus," "The Glow of Her Charm" reflects delicacy but merges into some forceful moments, while "Watercolors" uses up-and-down dynamics, not normally the strong suit of the pianist.
Of the many watered-down commercial efforts and overproduced music Ramsey Lewis has offered on big commercial labels, this one could easily be his most accessible to a legitimate jazz audience. It certainly is his very best recording in the last two decades of his star-studded career, and can certainly be recommended to all lovers, dreamers, and mainstream jazz listeners in general. ~ Michael G. Nastos

      Dot Com Blues CD
      by Jimmy Smith
    Our Price: $12.35 CD / $9.99 MP3
    Usually ships in 1-2 days
On his first album in more than five years, Jimmy Smith, who turned 75 shortly before the release date, attempts the soul-jazz version of what Santana did on Supernatural -- heavily featuring guest stars in an attempt to broaden his appeal. nThe basic band consists of Smith on organ, Reggie McBride on bass guitar, and Harvey Mason on drums, but this trio is never featured alone, although four tracks feature the trio joined only by guitarist Russell Malone -- "C C Rider," "Mood Indigo" (with John Clayton replacing McBride on acoustic bass), and two new Smith originals, the title track and "Tuition Blues." (On a fifth song, a remake of Smith's "8 Counts for Rita," the quartet is joined by percussionist Lenny Castro.) Not surprisingly, these are the most jazz-oriented performances on the album. The rest of the disc takes a blues turn, with Dr. John contributing vocals and piano on his own composition, the lead-off track "Only in It for the Money"; Taj Mahal singing and playing guitar on his own "Strut"; Etta James singing the Muddy Waters hit "I Just Wanna Make Love to You"; Keb' Mo' taking guitar and vocal duties on his composition "Over & Over"; and B.B. King doing the same on his old favorite "Three O'Clock Blues." Thus, half the album is given over to guest stars who sing, making this the most vocal-dominated album ever released under Jimmy Smith's name.
As a consequence, it is also something of a blues sampler with Smith playing a prominent role rather than a Jimmy Smith album. Jazz fans will be happy to know that, after more than 40 years of recording, Smith retains his ability to play, but Dot Com Blues is anything but a showcase for the man whose name is on the cover. ~ William Ruhlmann

Got My Mojo Workin'/Hoochie Cooche Man CD
      by Jimmy Smith
    Our Price: $12.59 CD / $9.99 MP3
    Usually ships in 1-2 days
GOT MY MOJO WORKIN'/HOOCHIE COOCHE MAN were previously released as two separate LPs. Includes liner notes by John Corbett and Orrin Keepnews.

Nobody, but nobody, has ever made the Hammond organ work so hard as Smith. He is the undisputed king of jazz organ, and defined the sound of 'soul jazz' throughout the 60s. His work with arrangers such as Oliver Nelson represents the commercial peak of his long career. This album is one of many on the Verve label that it was cool to tuck under your arm and say that you owned. Smooth covers of 'C-Jam Blues', 'Satisfaction' and 'Hi Heel Sneakers' complement the originals as another entirely different way of playing them. The bargain CD reissue has the complete Hoochie Coochie Man as a fantastic bonus.
Personnel: Jimmy Smith (vocals, organ); Oliver Nelson (conductor, arranger); Phil Woods (alto saxophone); Romeo Penque (tenor saxophone, flute); Jerome Richardson (baritone saxophone); Ernie Royal (trumpet); Kenny Burrell (guitar); Ron Carter, George Duvivier, Ben Tucker (bass); Grady Tate (drums).

Further Adventures Of Jimmy And Wes CD
      by Jimmy Smith
    Our Price: $12.25 CD / $6.39 MP3
    Usually ships in 1-2 days
This is the sort of thing that will place high in the results of an internet search on the phrase "roots of acid jazz." Organist Jimmy Smith and guitarist Wes Montgomery were already titans of the jazz world before they teamed up, and FURTHER ADVENTURES, their second album together, enhanced the legends of both men. For the most part, it's a slow-burning affair full of simmering grooves, laid-back solos, and hypnotic riffs. The tone is exemplified by a mellow jazz/bossa nova version of the '60s pop hit "Call Me," digging deeply into a loungey feel. Interestingly, though, bop boss Montgomery pulls the bluesy Smith into his own axis on a version of "'Round Midnight" that finds Smith venturing into more harmonically adventurous territory than usual.
Recorded in New York on September 21 & 28, 1966. Originally issued on Verve (8766). Includes liner notes by Michael Zwerin and Gene Santoro.

      Organ Grinder Swing CD
      by Jimmy Smith
    Our Price: $12.65 CD / $5.74 MP3
    Usually ships in 1-2 days
Using the monicker 'Incredible' was no flash banner, it was true. Smith defined the Hammond organ as a jazz instrument and milked and bled it to its limit. The sub-credit for guitarist Kenny Burrell and drummer Grady Tate is also well deserved. This is the ultimate groovy, smokey jazz trio record that Smith made. The title track has been used for countless radio trailers over the years, while the often covered Duke Ellington classic, 'Satin Doll', is given extra special effort. Burrell has worked with Smith more than any other musician. His mellow tone and Smith's treble notes blend like cucumber and salmon.

Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on June 15 & 16, 1965. Originally released on Verve (8628).
Personnel: Jimmy Smith (organ); Kenny Burrell (guitar); Grady Tate (drums).
Mojo (Publisher) (4/01, p.120) - "...On this '65 date Smith's classic sidemen...follwo every dynamic staband swell that the righteous, furious-fingered Hammondmeister can throw at them with the discipline and joy of true believers....inimitable and irresistible."
