Duets: An American Classic CD
by Tony Bennett
Our Price: $8.49 CD / $9.99 MP3
Usually ships in 1-2 days
Released shortly after Tony Bennett's 80th birthday, 2006's DUETS: AN AMERICAN CLASSIC finds the beloved
jazz/pop vocalist collaborating with an impressive array of friends and admirers. Amidst a backdrop of lush
string and horn arrangements, Bennett, still in remarkably bold voice despite his age, shines on these
winning tracks. Highlights include the buoyant "Lullaby of Broadway" (with the Dixie Chicks), the lightly
swinging "I Wanna Be Around" (with U2's Bono), and a rendition of one of Bennett's smooth signature tunes,
"The Best Is Yet to Come" (with Diana Krall). While duet albums can be spotty affairs, Bennett and his
well-selected singing partners make this a thoroughly enjoyable set.
Personnel: Tony Bennett (vocals); Diana Krall, Dixie Chicks, Elton John, George Michael, James Taylor , John Legend, Juanes, k.d. lang,
Michael Bublé, Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder, Sting, Tim McGraw, Elvis Costello, Barbra Streisand, Billy Joel, Bono , Celine Dion (vocals).
Rolling Stone (pp.72-74) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "That Bennett, now eighty, sings magnificently is little surprise. What is surprising
is the way he and his crack quartet inspire the rhythmic and tonal best from the [guests]...."

Send One Your Love CD
by Boney James
Our Price: $15.15 CD / $9.90 MP3
Usually ships in 1-2 days
Along with Dave Koz and Gerald Albright, Boney James has carved out a nice niche for himself as one of the most popular smooth jazz
saxophonists ever. Now, Mr. James has gone and done a concept album, with the (eternal) concept being Valentine's Day love. His
melodious, suave sax playing brings out the amorous best in choice selections by Barry White, Stevie Wonder, and James Taylor,
whose "Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight" features singer R&B singer Quinn, something of a Boney James discovery.
Audio Mixer: Bill Schnee.
Audio Remasterer: Sangwook "Sunny" Nam.JazzTimes (p.87) - "[I]nstant classics. 'Hold on Tight' is a slow-burning ballad with
strings, while 'City of Lights' is a melancholy piece that pays homage to the subject of the title, the romantic city of Paris."

Ella Wishes You A Swinging Christmas CD
by Ella Fitzgerald
Our Price: $7.85 CD / $9.99
MP3
Usually ships in 1-2 days
ELLA FITZGERALD WISHES YOU A SWINGING CHRISTMAS is a charming, warmly humorous--and yes, swinging--set of classic Christmas tunes.
The program is familiar, from bouncy singalongs like "Jingle Bells" to slinky ballads like a downright sexy "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,"
but Fitzgerald treats each song with exactly as much respect as it deserves. And so Frank Loesser's "What Are You Doing New Year's Eve" is wistfully
romantic and Sammy Cahn and Jule Styne's "Let It Snow" is kittenishly enticing. As always, Norman Granz's production avoids the schlock that drowns
some holiday sets. This is as good as jazz Christmas albums get.
This is a delightful Christmas jazz reissue featuring Ella Fitzgerald in prime form. On most selections she is backed by Frank DeVol's orchestra.
The original dozen selections have been expanded with the addition of three alternate takes plus three selections only out previously on samplers,
including "Christmas Island." Fitzgerald clearly had a fun time recording such songs as "Jingle Bells," "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town,"
"Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer," and "Frosty the Snowman," along with a few more serious pieces. These concise performances (all under
four minutes) are charming, making this one of the better Christmas jazz sets. ~ Scott Yanow

When I Fall In Love CD
by Chris Botti
Our Price: $9.59 CD / $9.99 MP3
Usually ships in 1-2 days
Although the most popular contemporary jazz tends to fall into the "lite" category, trumpeter Chris Botti avoids painting himself into this
corner by sticking with an approach more reminiscent of Chet Baker. For his 2004 album, WHEN I FALL IN LOVE, Botti
takes it a step further by employing the London Session Orchestra to provide him with lush accompaniment on a program predominantly made
up of standards. The Oregon native adds further layers to the album's sound by calling on singer Paula Cole, whose burnished vocals
provide a fine foil on a brush-stroked version of Irving Berlin's "What'll I Do?" and "How Love Should Be," with its subtle mix of piano and strings.
Along with exquisite takes on Rodgers & Hart ("My Romance") and the Gershwins ("Someone to Watch Over Me"), Botti also shows a knack for
the cinematic nuance of Ennio Morricone ("Cinema Paradiso") and the pop-jazz of Sade ("No Ordinary Love"). The handsome horn player even
ropes old employer Sting and bandmates Dominic Miller and Vinnie Colaiuta into lending their talents on the samba-flavored "La Belle
Dame Sans Regrets" (composed by Sting and Miller).
With its dusky mood, WHEN I FALL IN LOVE serves as the perfect soundtrack for a
late-night cocktail party or a romantic evening by the fireplace.

Hot Rats CD
by Frank Zappa
Our Price: $10.89 CD
Usually ships in 1-2 days
HOT RATS was digitally remixed in 1987. "The Gumbo Variations" has been extended an extra 4 minutes from the original LP version.
All of the tracks have been remixed, and in some cases sound quite different.
Having temporarily disbanded the Mothers Of Invention, Frank Zappa recorded this exceptional solo album. His group was renowned
for musical satire, but here the artist opted to showcase his prowess on guitar. Aside from "Willie The Pimp," which features
a cameo vocal by Zapppa's old friend Captain Beefheart, the set is comprised of instrumentals. The players, including Don "Sugarcane"
Harris, Jean-Luc Ponty, and Ian Underwood, are uniformly excellent, combining to provide a solid jazz-rock platform for Zappa's
compulsive soloing. Here the guitarist relishes a freedom which, while acknowledging past achievements, prepares new territories
for exploration. As such, HOT RATS was a pivotal release in Zappa's oft-misunderstood career.
Recorded from August to September 1969.
Personnel: Frank Zappa (guitar, bass, percussion); Captain Beefheart (vocals); Jean-Luc Ponty, Sugar Cane Harris (violin); Ian
Underwood (clarinet, saxophone, piano, organ); Max Bennett, Shuggie Otis (bass); John Guerin, Paul Humphrey, Ron Selico (drums).
Rolling Stone (3/7/70, p.48) - "...If you're eager for a first taste of Beefheart or interested in the new approaches to instrumental
style and improvisational technique being developed these days, this is as good a place to start as any..."

Ground CD
by Tord Gustavsen
Our Price: $14.05 CD / $9.99 MP3
Usually ships in 1-2 days
In the proto-typical Scandinavian ECM style of modern jazz oriented music, pianist Tord Gustavsen follows the path of previous
progenitors influenced by Bill Evans, forged by Keith Jarrett, and extended by the likes of Mike Nock. This is certainly late-night,
nocturnal music, completely reserved and relaxing, ultra-melodic, calm, peaceful, and non-threatening. Rarely does a tempo move beyond
medium, a dynamic merge above mezzo piano, and any mood goes farther than moderately cool. Well within this consistent timbre,
Gustavsen and his trio show a modicum of diversity and influences. Fellow ECM labelmate Bobo Stenson's style and technique is most
extant during the lilting "Edges of Happiness," "Twins" is spiritual, calm, and light but not somber, while "Token of Tango" is
perfectly representative of its title. "Curtains Aside" mixes march rhythm in 6/8 with a regal light funk, the delicate waltz
"Being There" is reminiscent of "The Shadow of Your Smile," while darker ballads "Colours of Mercy" and "Sentiment" sport undoubtedly
religious overtones. Gustavsen, while playing laid-back, pristine, pretty, and serene music, is far from challenging convention or
pushing the envelope. Conversely, his personal voice is fully realized.
Time will tell whether this style finds a worldwide audience,
moves away from this type of contemporary texture music, or takes the approach he has established to any more extreme measures,
even softer or more forceful. ~ Michael G. Nastos

December CD
by Chris Botti
Our Price: $8.75 CD / $9.99 MP3
Usually ships in 1-2 days
The story about there being more suicides around the holidays turns out to be a myth, but like all urban legends, it caught on among the
populace (or at least among lazy journalists) because it sounds like it should be true; as trumpeter Chris nBotti writes in a sleeve note
to his seasonal collection, December, "At no other time of the year is there a wider array of emotions than the month of December." This
is a clue that Botti, in acceding to his record company's request that he undertake a Christmas album, was not interested in simply
celebrating the season in his interpretations of holiday standards. There have been other such contemplative Christmas records: George
Winston's album, also called December, is calm rather than celebratory, and Barbra Streisand's Christmas Memories, released in the wake
of the September 11 terrorist attacks in 2001, is another collection that takes in the season's complexities. Add Botti's album to that
list. The approach, of course, fits in with the trumpeter's overall musical style. Often heard through a mute, his playing usually has
an intimate, low-key character, and that is true here, too. Critics have compared him to Miles Davis, and to that one easily may add Chet
Baker, especially because like Baker, Botti has chosen to sing here, applying an adequate tenor to Richard Marx's "Perfect Day" and
"Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" (the latter one of the more troubled of lyrics to become a Christmas standard). It isn't all
doom and gloom, of course; there's a playful reading of "Winter Wonderland," for instance. But this is still an album to be put on in
the shank of the evening when the Christmas festivities have subsided, not at the height of the celebrations. ~ William Ruhlmann
