      by Highnote label
    Our Price: $9.49 CD
    Usually ships in 1-2 days
Jazz After Midnight contains ten romantic standards performed by artists on the Highnote label. While short on improvising or energetic interludes, this is a decent budget-line set that features Frank Morgan, David "Fathead" Newman, and Larry Coryell with less than obvious inclusions by Mike LeDonne, Don Sickler and Louis Hayes & the Cannonball Legacy Band. Recommended for those who appreciate jazz as romantic background music. ~ Al Campbell

      Twist Of Motown CD
      by Bob James
    Our Price: $11.39 CD / $9.99 MP3
    Usually ships in 1-2 days
There's a scene in Oliver Stone's 1986 film Platoon that speaks volumes about the importance of Motown Records to the baby boomer generation. In that scene from Platoon -- which takes place in the jungles of Vietnam during the Vietnam War -- several American soldiers are singing the Miracles' "The Tracks of My Tears" in an effort to provide some temporary relief from the horror that surrounds them. During that scene, the song is about much more than a great melody -- it's about camaraderie, solace, and comfort. Like the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, James Brown, and Stax, Motown was -- to use Berry Gordy's phrase -- "the sound of young America." While the baby boomers aren't so young anymore, the Motown songbook holds up nicely after all these years -- a fact that is illustrated by A Twist of Motown. This 2003 project finds guitarist Lee Ritenour producing a jazz-friendly tribute to Motown and overseeing an all-star cast that includes George Benson, Gerald Albright, Dave Grusin, Chris Botti, and Bob James, among others. The instrumentals (which range from "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" to Stevie Wonder's "Creepin'") tend to draw on both soul-jazz and crossover jazz/NAC, while the vocal performances -- including Brenda Russell on "The Tracks of My Tears" and Will Downing on "Just My Imagination" -- are aimed at urban or quiet storm listeners. From a jazz standpoint.
A Twist of Motown isn't as adventurous or risk-taking as it could have been; if you want to hear some truly daring interpretations of Motown gems, check out Joe Farrell's version of Wonder's "Too High" or Grover Washington, Jr.'s arrangement of Marvin Gaye's "Inner City Blues." Nonetheless, the performances -- both instrumental and vocal -- are generally likable and satisfying, and when all is said and done, Ritenour has affirmed how durable the Motown songbook continues to be. ~ Alex Henderson

Best Of New Urban Jazz CD
      by Compilation
    Our Price: $11.55 CD
    Usually ships in 1-2 days
Depending on your taste, sweet and sexy in this case could really mean slight and sleepy, but it should be detectable from a glance on the sleeve -- where established names like Jeff Lorber, Warren Hill, Pieces of a Dream, and Alex Bugnon appear -- that you'll be getting a compilation of music that is undeniably very smooth and very relaxed. A two-disco compilation from Narada Jazz, Sweet & Sexy: Best of New Urban highlights material released during the last few years on Narada, Capitol, Higher Octave, and Blue Note. The second disc, dubbed "sexy," is better than the first since it's not as likely to fall into the background without notice; the real distinction is that the cuts are more upbeat than what can be heard on the first disc.
Some of the notable inclusions are Urban Knights' "You're the One for Me," Acoustic Alchemy's "Angel of the South," Bugnon's version of Lauryn Hill's "All That I Can Say" (the original was recorded by Mary J. Blige), and Shades of Soul's version of Evelyn King's "Love Come Down." ~ Andy Kellman

      Verve Remixed 2 CD
    Our Price: $11.35 CD / $10.89 MP3
    Usually ships in 1-2 days
Encouraged by the success of the first VERVE REMIXED album, the techno-friendly souls at Verve have once again opened up their vaults to electronica artists. This time around, the Funky Lowlives kick things off with Dizzy Gillespie's "Manteca," a minimal yet urgent rendition of the classic, replete with occasional synthesizer washes and driving percussion. Felix Da Housecat gives Nina Simone a fittingly decadent house treatment on "Sinnerman," while the Gotan Project takes a more subtle accordion-driven approach on Sarah Vaughan's saucy "Whatever Lola Wants." Other standout tracks include Layo & Bushwacka's dreamy remix of Ella Fitzgerald's "Angel Eyes," Fila Brazillia's sunny version of Cal Tjader's "Soul Sauce," Dan the Automator's funky side of Willie Bobo's "Fried Neckbones and Some Home Fries," and Koop's surprisingly traditional version of Astrud Gilberto's "Here's That Rainy Day."
While these re-workings are obviously dance-floor oriented, the brilliance of the original recordings always manages to shine through, making the collection appealing to both club kids and jazz fans.

Forever, For Always, For Luther CD
      by Luther Vandross
    Our Price: $10.79 CD / $9.90 MP3
    Usually ships in 1-2 days
Through over a quarter-century of pouring his heart into the most tender of love songs, of stirring the most passionate of fires in women everywhere, Luther Vandross has become synonymous with smooth soul. Therefore, it's not surprising that his songs would translate readily to the smoothest of jazz interpretations. On 2004's FOREVER, FOR ALWAYS, FOR LUTHER, a gathering of jazz all-stars pays tribute to the living legend.
,br> Fittingly, the emphasis of the disc is on Vandross's ballads, which make up the bulk of his work. Saxophonists bookend the collection neatly, with Kirk Whalum gliding his way around the lightly rousing "Any Love" and Rick Braun closing the set with a take on Vandross's Grammy-winning "Dance with My Father." Another saxophonist, Mindi Abair, performs a nice rendition of one of his peppiest numbers--the 1985 hit "Stop to Love."
Vandross's music also translates remarkably well to guitar, as Paul Jackson, Jr. and George Benson each offer polished, pleasant tunes. FOREVER, FOR ALWAYS, FOR LUTHER stands as a fitting homage to a modern R&B legend.

      Fundamental Roll/Not Shy CD
      by Walter Egan
    Our Price: $16.09 CD
    Usually ships in 1-2 days
Walter Egan's big hit, "Magnet & Steel," was issued on his Not Shy album in 1978, his sophomore effort. It was the only chart score he ever had. That said, this two-fer reissue of Egan's first two offerings is a solid chapter in the California pop/rock canon of the 1970s. History is kind in its view here, because Egan's own songwriting is top-notch, and having Lindsey Buckingham as a producer -- with backing vocals from Stevie Nicks on both albums -- couldn't hurt either, since this was Mac's prime era. These are solid outings, the groove quotient is high, the vibes are warm and sunny, and the attitude is perfect -- with a fine balance between sweetness and swagger. Other standouts include "She's So Tough," "Surfin' & Drivin'" (with Dean Torrence from Jan & Dean), and "When I Get My Wheels." ~ Thom Jurek

Walter Egan was first famous for the song "Hearts On Fire" which he wrote with Tom Guidera and was recorded by Gram Parsons and Emmy Lou Harris on the LP "Grievous Angel".He was signed to Columbia Records in 1977 and released "Fundamental Roll", his first LP. It was produced by Fleetwood Mac's Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks (as well as himself). They also played and sang on the record. "Not Shy" was released in 1978 and also featured the participation of the Fleetwood Mac luminaries. The million-selling gold record "Magnet and Steel" was the center piece of this record.
Through the years Walter has performed with Linda Ronstadt, Jackson Browne, Jules Shear, Wanda Jackson, the band Spirit and Randy and the Rainbows.Walter continues to write and perform in Nashville Tennesee, as well as pursuing a career as a painter and a sceenwriter.
