    Grateful Dead CD's and DVD's on EvO:R

The Grateful Dead were an American rock band formed in 1965 in the San Francisco Bay Area. The band was known for its unique and eclectic style, which fused elements of rock, folk, bluegrass, blues, reggae, country, jazz, psychedelia, and space rock—and for live performances of long musical improvisation. "Their music," writes Lenny Kaye, "touches on ground that most other groups don't even know exists."

The fans of the Grateful Dead, some of whom followed the band from concert to concert for years, are known as "Deadheads" and are known for their dedication to the band's music. Many refer to the band simply as "the Dead." As of 2003, the remaining band members who had been touring under the name "The Other Ones" changed their official group name to "The Dead". Deadheads continue to use that nickname to refer to all versions of the band.

The Grateful Dead's musical influences varied widely; in concert recordings or on record albums one can hear psychedelic rock, blues, rock and roll, country-western, bluegrass, country-rock, and improvisational jazz. These various influences were distilled into a diverse and psychedelic whole that made the Grateful Dead "the pioneering Godfathers of the jam band world." They were ranked 55th in the issue "The Greatest Artists of all Time" by Rolling Stone magazine.

At EvO:R, we don't actually stock or sell the CDs you are looking at. We simply list each CD by genre and link you to the CD Universe website for the sale.

Very Best Of Grateful Dead CD
      by Grateful Dead
    Our Price: $10.15
    Usually ships in 1-2 days
Even though the two-disc WHAT A LONG STRANGE TRIP IT'S BEEN may have more fully anthologized the Grateful Dead's fruitful Warner years, no previous anthology has ever summarized the band's entire career, on through the slim-pickin's mid-1970s to their celebratory late-'80s comeback. In this respect, THE VERY BEST OF.. . can be called a nearly definitive collection. Still, this is an entry point for the casual passerby, so the psychedelic largesse of the Dead's late-'60s albums is entirely eschewed in favor of the shorter, more concise songs of their folk-rock period ("Uncle John's Band," "Friend of the Devil," etc.). Consequently, this becomes a tribute not to the improvisational warrior Dead but to the creatively songful Dead, even as we hear them age gracefully into the older, wiser "Touch of Gray," which brought them a whole new generation of admirers.
All tracks have been remastered using HDCD technology. Recorded between 1967 & 1987. Includes liner notes by James Austin.

      To Terrapin: Hartford '77 CD
      by Grateful Dead
    Our Price: $17.65
    Usually ships in 1-2 days
Long a prized bootleg, the final show of the Grateful Dead's Spring '77 tour finally saw an official release via the three disc TO TERRAPIN: HARTFORD '77 set. Capturing the band at the peak of the late '70s era--and just before the release of the disco-tinged experiment TERRAPIN STATION--the box focuses mostly on the hippie funk side of their formula as evidenced on the lively Chuck Berry cover "Promised Land" and future TERRAPIN cut "Samson and Delilah." Despite the uptempo groovers, the set wins on the strength of a 20-minute "Sugaree" and a particularly mournful "Row Jimmy," both of which foreground Jerry's languid leads and mastery of the slow jam.

    Liner Note Author: Gary Lambert.
Grateful Dead: Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir (vocals, guitar); Donna Jean Godchaux (vocals); Keith Godchaux (piano, keyboards); Phil Lesh (electric bass); Mickey Hart (drums, percussion).

Grateful Dead - Dead Ahead DVD
      by Grateful Dead
    Our Price: $18.25
    Usually ships in 1-2 days
Oct. 1, 1980: The Grateful Dead play the world-famous Radio City Music Hall in a week long marathon of sold-out shows that were beloved by fans and captured on film. The DVD contains more than 50 minutes of nver-before-released footage of bonus songs, adding to almost three hours of content. Jerry Garcia, Bill Kreutzmann, Phil Lesh, Bob Weir, Mickey Hart and Brent Mydland, live: America's most beloved touring band. Includes a collector's booklet, rare and previously unseen photo.

This electrifying live performance by the cult jam band The Grateful Dead was filmed (oddly enough) at Radio City Music Hall in October of 1980. DEAD AHEAD splices together the best footage of that historical week when the Dead played at the legendary Music Hall every day. Songs performed over the nearly two hour video include "Uncle John's Band," "To Lay Me Down," and "On the Road Again."

      Aoxomoxoa CD
      by Grateful Dead
    Our Price: $9.29
    Usually ships in 1-2 days
The Dead's first attempt at sixteen-track recording, AOXOMOXOA was remixed at Alembic Studios in San Francisco in 1971 by original engineers Bob Matthews and Betty Cantor. This is the mix used for the CD issue.

All tracks have been digitally remastered using HDCD technology.

Named after one of famed San Francisco poster artist Rick Griffin's lysergic palindromes, the Grateful Dead's third album saw the band inject their acid-fueled sting into folk music of various ages. Hunter added a lyrical landscape perfect for the band's blend of exploration and tradition. Portraits of a rebellious mystic ("St. Stephen") and a dandy day-tripper ("Cosmic Charlie"), proper Olde English tales ("Dupree's Diamond Blues"), and hallucinatory excursions to the borders of Hunter's muse ("China Cat Sunflower," "Mountains Of The Moon") are remarkable in that their expansive overview is interwoven with precise detail.

The elongated strides of ANTHEM OF THE SUN were replaced with short bursts that hinted at the music's timeless sources. "St. Stephen" is a raw clarion call from Temple Mount. "Dupree's Diamond Blues" sounds like it fell out of the bluegrass tradition into a field of poppies. "Cosmic Charlie" is built on a "Revolution"-like riff, but with a far more subtle thrust and sweetly contrary harmonies. And "What's Become Of The Baby" is a nearly nine-minute excursion into weirdness that clearly mapped out one of the interstellar musical spaces the Grateful Dead had begun visiting.

    1969 Remastered W/ 4 Bonus Rarities.
Rolling Stone (7/12/69, p.36) - "...AOXOMOXOA is the work of the magical band....The gentle choir, the dancing mountain harpsichording, the mystical aura of another consciousness....No other music sustains a lifestyle so delicate, loving and lifelike." Down Beat (1/02, p.74) - 3.5 stars out of 5 - "...A dense and occasionally arcane studio effort that includes several vintage Dead perfromances....epitomizing [their] late-'60s drug-infested mindset..."       Blues For Allah: Expanded & Remastered CD
      by Grateful Dead
    Our Price: $11.39
    Usually ships in 1-2 days
Originally released on Grateful Dead (4001) on September 1, 1975.
As any Deadhead will tell you, the magic of the Grateful Dead was always better captured in a live setting than in a recording studio. Still, while they've probably released more live records than any band ever, their career has been punctuated by solid studio efforts featuring songs that would become staples of their live sets. BLUES FOR ALLAH, released in 1975, was rich in future nuggets. It marked a return to the studio after a string of mostly live releases, and it was an accomplished and varied record.

BLUES FOR ALLAH begins with a jazz-tinged song cycle: the astringent funk groove of "Help on the Way" seguing into the flowing instrumental "Slipknot!" which, naturally enough, slips effortlessly into future concert classic "Franklin's Tower," with its enigmatic but irresistible refrain, "roll away the dew." High points include the sleek, backbone-loosening "The Music Never Stopped" and the languid, psychedelic reggae of "Crazy Fingers." The record is not without its unsettling moments, especially the ominous title track, which probably caused a few freak-outs in its heyday.
Mojo (Publisher) (p.153) - "This is pure Dead music, performed and created as one, and is a complete assimilation of styles that goes beyond recognized genres." Hide Description
