Songbird CD
by Eva Cassidy
Our Price: $$13.45 CD / $9.90 MP3
Usually ships in 1-2 days
This posthumous anthology is the perfect introduction to the astonishing vocal talents of Eva Cassidy, a young,
relatively unknown singer who died of cancer just as her career was beginning to gain steam at the age of 33.
Cassidy,
a native of Washington D.C., gained local favor with her pure, straightforward tone and her lovely,
tasteful interpretations of everything from standards to gospel to contemporary pop.
SONGBIRD is a definitive best-of selection that picks from Cassidy's studio albums and shows the
depth and breadth of her skills. SONGBIRD's perfection as a compilation is in its song choice,
which covers Cassidy's takes on gospel ("Oh, Had I A Golden Thread"), soul (Curtis Mayfield's
"People Get Ready"), pop (Sting's "Fields of Gold"), and well-known standards ("Over the Rainbow").
Cassidy's own perfection stems from her ability to bring the same precise, inventive phrasing and
crystalline tone to each individual song, regardless of genre, making it indelibly her own. This
collection became a best-selling number-one album in the U.K., and with good reason.
Rolling Stone (8/30/01, p.125) - 3.5 stars out of 5 - "...She effortlessly shuffles styles and the song
selections are astute...Cassidy comes across as a bluesier version of English folk singer Sandy Denny....
she melts her personality into the fabric of each melody..."

Personnel: Mary Chapin Carpenter (vocals, acoustic guitar); John Jennings (guitars, accordion, piano, drums, percussion);
John Carroll (piano).

Dirty Linen (p.63) - "This is an intimate, reflective album....There is darkness and light here, but always joy behind
the sadness, connection behind the separateness, hope on the other side of disconnection."

Liege & Lief CD
by Fairport Convention
Our Price: $6.55 CD / $7.59 MP3
Usually ships in 1-2 days
The advertisements for Fairport Convention's epoch-making fourth album ran: "the first (literally) British folk rock LP ever."
While that's not (literally) true, LIEGE & LIEF created the template for all subsequent recordings in that style.
It also represented a catharsis for the band, which reconvened after a traumatic road accident that killed drummer
Martin Lamble. Once again focused and with redoubtable folk fiddler Dave Swarbrick now permanently involved, Fairport
threw themselves into the electrification of ballads, myths, and rollicking jigs.
The results were both innovative and
stimulating. The union was blessed. If you sat down and tried to imagine a dream folk-rock band, it still would not match
the potential here. From the lusting pace of "Matty Groves" to the tender cooing of "Crazy Man Michael," Sandy Denny's
voice and Richard Thompson's virtuosic guitar are the perfect conduits for this milestone, which has been imitated a thousand times, but never equalled.
"[A] folk-rock landmark, an amalgamation of traditional songs and self-penned ones that sounded just as authentically ancient."
Mojo (Publisher) (p.72) - "LIEGE & LIFE saw the Fairports burrow further into the comfort and shade of English folklore to give birth to folk rock."

Time (The Revelator) CD
by Gillian Welch
Our Price: $10.15 CD
Usually ships in 1-2 days
TIME (tHE REVELATOR) was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album.
Displaying a remarkable consistency of vision, Gillian Welch sticks to her guns on her third album, by limiting the sonic
palette to the twin acoustic guitars and vocals of herself and partner David Rawlings (and a touch
of banjo). With all the hip cred she's built up, especially with her work on the O BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU soundtrack, this
might have been her big pop move, but Welch plays it admirably straight on TIME (THE REVELATOR).
While the melodies and
lyrics here do occasionally stretch the boundaries of her willfully anachronistic folk/country style a little, this an
even moodier, more intense recording than Welch's previous two. There's a hazy, dreamlike feel to "Revelator,"
"Dear Someone," and especially the 14-minute, Dylanesque closer "I Dream a Highway," somewhat akin to the plaints
of Lucinda Williams's contemporaneous ESSENCE album. Brief respites from all the serious brow-knitting are provided b
y the ironic, recorded-live "I Want to Sing That Rock and Roll" and the straight-up homage "Elvis Presley Blues," but
ultimately this is a dark, murky (and rewarding) trip.
Grammy-nominated artist Gillian Welch has created some of her most passionate works on her 3rd release. This 10 song CD was produced
by songwriting partner David Rawlings and was recorded in the historic RCA Studio B in Nashville, features the hauntingly ethereal
'Revelator'as it's lead track as well as a live performance of 'I Want To Sing That Rock And Roll.' 10 tracks. Acony Records. 2001.

Townes CD
by Steve Earle
Our Price: $13.39 CD
Usually ships in 1-2 days
With the appropriately titled TOWNES, Steve Earle pays tribute to his mentor, the late singer/songwriter legend Townes
Van Zandt. Like Earle, Van Zandt was a Texan who made his way to Nashville even though his music didn't fit the mainstream
country mold. Earle, who learned a lot from Van Zandt, honors his hero's mix of country, folk, and poetic lyricism with an
affectionate trip through the Van Zandt songbook.
Whether he's tackling a dark, moody tune like "Marie," a post-Dylan flight
of lyrical fancy like "Lungs," or a trad-tinged country song like "White Freightliner Blues," Earle brings just the right
mix of reverence and renegade fire to the table.
Q (Magazine) (p.132) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[A] dream album, full of devotion, care and spirit as he gently caresses new nuances out of even the much-covered and revered 'Pancho & Lefty,' and adds sinister new layers to 'Marie'..."
Record Collector (magazine) (p.82) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "This is an album of subtlety and reserve, which allows the original emotional intent of the music to speak for itself." Hide Description

Live CD
by Alison Krauss
Our Price: $14.89 CD
Usually ships in 1-2 days
LIVE won the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Bluegrass Album.
"Cluck Old Hen" won for Best Country Instrumental Performance.
This is a Super Audio CD playable only on Super Audio CD players.
A key contributor to the popular upswing of bluegrass, Alison Krauss & Union Station found their stewardship enlarged
even more with the explosive success of the O BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU? soundtrack. Now furthering the cause is LIVE,
a 2-CD set that allows this gaggle of talented musicians to stretch and impress over the course of 25 songs. Recorded
over 2 nights at the Louisville Palace in Kentucky, this set list is an interesting mix of old favorites, traditional
fare and some fun covers.
Blessed with a shimmering voice that oftentimes is reminiscent of Dolly Parton's, Krauss' crystalline phrasing makes
for goosebump inducing versions of songs like the delicate "Ghost In This House" and more rugged "Take Me For Longing.
" Union Station members also get plenty of licks in performances ranging from Dan Tyminski's rich singing on the traditional
"Man of Constant Sorrow" taken from the aforementioned film to Jerry Douglas' laid-back dobro instrumental medley "A
Tribute To Peador O'Donnell/Monkey Let The Hogs Out." Of course, nothing says crossover more than a cover of the Bad
Company nugget "Oh, Atlanta" which has become a Krauss staple over time.
Rolling Stone (12/12/02, p.98) - "...Krauss delivers more acoustic country ballads and charming uptempo songs..."
Uncut (2/03, p.77) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...If 2001's NEW FAVOURITE was a high watermark, LIVE is its perfect
complement. As a touring ensemble of impeccable musicianship, UNION STATION are almost as astonishing as, say,
Dylan's Never Ending Tour troupe..."

Deepest End: Live In Concert CD
by Gov't Mule
Our Price: $16.69 CD
Usually ships in 1-2 days
Return To Summer Lake is Steven's third recording. Special guest artists on the CD include Molly O'Brien, Nina Gerber,
Debi Smith, SONiA of Disappear Fear, Pete & Maura Kennedy, Al Petteway & Bruce Molsky. Steven Bio:Billboard Magazine describes
Steven Gellman's music as "intensely sensitive and impressively intelligent at the same time". As another reviewer aptly phrased
it, Gellman's songs are "Kodak moments" from his life.He often performs in nursing homes and retirement communities, and even
used a choir of senior citizens as backup on the track "Almeda at 90" from his album "Photobook".
Dick Cerri, President of the World Folk Music Association says "Steve's natural ability on stage enables an audience to not
only enjoy the songs and stories, but to participate in the performance."Nowhere is there a better example of how Gellman
touches people's lives than the story of fan Jennifer Baker, blind and wheelchair bound from a lifelong struggle with kidney
failure. She first heard Steven at a Borders Book store concert and instantly became one of his most ardent fans. His music
was an inspiration to her in her last months and Gellman performed at a memorial service in her honor to benefit the National
Kidney Association. The song "A Little Bit Fine" on Steven's CD "Return to Summer Lake" was written for Jennifer and is one of
his most requested songs. His new release, "Love Loss Longing", is Steven's first concept album.
