      Pink Moon CD
      by Nick Drake
    Our Price: $8.09 CD / $9.99 MP3
    Usually ships in 1-2 days
Reissue of the late British folk icon's final full-length album, released in 1972.

The results of those solo sessions were as harrowing and stark as anything by Robert Johnson or Charley Patton. Enclosed in an inner world of psychological distress, Drake recorded PINK MOON's dispatches from a private hell that was simultaneously terrifying and beautiful. Both the lyrics and the melodic motifs are pared to the bone here, their simplicity making them all the more immediately striking. The most nakedly emotional and disturbing moment is probably "Parasite," a visceral-but-mysterious account of a disconsolate soul roaming through the world in search of succor, with Drake taking the starring role, ultimately offering, "take a look, you may see me in the dirt." This was the end of the road for Nick Drake in more ways than one, but just the beginning for the scores of songwriters subsequently inspired by his bleak-but-beautiful visions.

It's widely reported that by the time Nick Drake got around to recording his third and final album, PINK MOON, his already-precarious mental/emotional state had drastically deteriorated. In a deep depression, Drake recorded a brace of solo acoustic tunes, dropped the tape off unannounced at the label's office one day, and that was the last the world at large ever heard of Drake's music.
NME (Magazine) (8/12/00, p.28) - Ranked #8 in The NME "Top 30 Heartbreak Albums" - "... Touched with luminous symbolism and uncanny intimacy, this is the sound of inescapable retreat."

      Rumor & Sigh CD
      by Richard Thompson
    Our Price: $8.85 CD / $9.99 MP3
    Usually ships in 1-2 days
Richard Thompson's albums with Mitchell Froom in the producer's chair tended to be stylistically varied affairs, and on RUMOR AND SIGH, the singer's distinctive English vocal inflections and biting guitar spar inspiringly with Froom's kitchen-sink ... Full Descriptionapproach to production. Froom found intriguing ways to cope with Thompson's own wild stylistic approach, ranging from dark, narrative acoustic ballads ("1952 Vincent Black Lightning"), through radio-friendly, country-tinged rock ("Keep Your Distance," "You Dream Too Much"), to demonic rock & rollers ("I Feel So Good," "Mother Knows Best'). SIGH also showcases Thompson's lyrical extremes, from the intense ("I Misunderstood," "Mystery Wind") to the daffy ("Don't Sit On My Jimmy Shands," "Psycho Street").

Though Richard Thompson's cult following continued to revere the uniformly high-quality albums he released throughout the 1980s, by the end of that decade he was finding it difficult to find the wider audience his work with former wife Linda had once attracted. That changed at the start of the '90s with the career-revivifying RUMOR & SIGH. Producer Mitchell Froom had been in Thompson's corner since the mid-'80s, but it was here that his modernist approach meshed fully with Thompson's folk-rock roots in a truly serendipitous way.
    Q (6/91) - 4 Stars - Excellent - One of Q Magazine's 50 best albums of 1991.

      Mothership CD
      by Led Zeppelin
    Our Price: $12.15 CD
    Usually ships in 1-2 days
Upon the release of MOTHERSHIP in 2007, almost three decades after their demise, Led Zeppelin arguably stood as the only other band in rock history to merit space with the Beatles in the greatest-of-all-time debate. While the latter practically invented the how-to guide for composing and recording modern pop, Zeppelin taught the machinery how to rock with a seismic bravado that decades latter still rattles foundations. In the post-Zeppelin era, rock became a synonym for a heaviness intended to both inspire awe and knock you flat with its weight.

The first six Led Zeppelin records contain nary a less-than-stellar track and define perfection as a canon; yet adequately compiling bits and pieces of this remarkable run has always eluded the band. Though this collection is no substitute for the first six records, MOTHERSHIP succeeds as a greatest hits retrospective on two levels: one, as an introduction for neophytes who want all the band's signature songs, and two, as a sound upgrade for completists. (In fact, Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, and John Paul Jones themselves are all given production credit on these blistering remasters.) While many extraordinary gems--"Going to California," "Battle Of Evermore," and "Your Time Is Gonna Come," among them--are left out, no reasonable Zep head can argue with the cuts that are included, from "Communication Breakdown" and "Black Dog" to "Dancing Days," "Kashmir," and "Achilles' Last Stand." In the end, MOTHERSHIP works as a stirring lecture in Zeppelin 101.
Uncut (p.112) - 5 stars out of 5 -- "[MOTHERSHIP] gives us an insight into how devastating this arcane, courageous, frontierless, much-loved, much-feared music from so many worlds ago can still sound."
Kerrang (Magazine) (p.46) - "[T]his covers all the rock bases....It's a monument to their power and crunch, riff follows solo follows hammering drums with visceral motion."
Q (Magazine) (p.129) - 5 stars out of 5 -- "[E]verything here does the job. For all the cold ambitions, brutal arrogance and sheer power on display, there's also an exuberance and malevolent charm."
Mojo (Publisher) (p.121) - 5 stars out of 5 -- "[T]estament to the fact that Zep's music remains bold, majestic and utterly untouchable, regardless of format."

No More Sad Refrains: The Anthology CD
      by Sandy Denny
    Our Price: $15.15 CD
    Usually ships in 1-2 days
This anthology is a fitting tribute to the towering artistry of Sandy Denny. Not only was she a heartbreakingly riveting singer, she also composed timeless songs, including the one that closes this two-disc set and lends it its title. These 34 songs are drawn from her work with Fairport Convention, Fotheringay, and her own jeweled solo albums--THE NORTH STAR GRASSMAN & THE RAVENS, SANDY, and LIKE AN OLD FASHIONED WALTZ are all enduring works of grace and beauty.

With the combination of her British Isles heritage and a love for American folk music, Sandy Denny developed a voice of her own fairly early on, first flourishing in Fairport Convention, then starting out on her own in a variety of settings. All of the phases of her 10-year career (she died in 1978) are represented here, making this an essential collection. Two other sets available are the three-disc WHO KNOWS WHERE THE TIME GOES, and THE BEST OF SANDY DENNY, on a single disc.
This collection includes songs from Sandy Denny's solo albums THE NORTH STAR GRASSMAN AND THE RAVENS, SANDY, LIKE AN OLD FASHIONED WALTZ and RENDEZVOUS, as well as tracks by Fairport Convention, Fotheringay and The Bunch, and various rare recordings and demos.

How The West Was Won CD
      by Led Zeppelin
    Our Price: $17.59 CD
    Usually ships in 1-2 days
In the course of putting together the live Led Zeppelin DVD for 2003 release, Jimmy Page came across some great concert recordings from the band's 1972 stint in California. HOW THE WEST WAS WON is three discs' worth of vintage Zep, far superior to the band's only other live album THE SONG REMAINS THE SAME. Here is the fearsome foursome in all their glory and fury, coming off like crazed rock & roll Vikings on the opening "Immigrant Song," reinventing the blues form on "Heartbreaker," and just plain rocking the doors off the joint on "Rock and Roll" and "Black Dog."

This being 1972, the band had made its journey into the folk-rock realm as well, and come out with the touching "Going to California" and "That's the Way," the earthy "Bron-Yr-Aur Stomp," and the minstrel-in-the-hills fancy of "Over the Hills and Far Away," all of which are given strong voice here. A 25-minute "Dazed and Confused" and epic-length drum solo on the John Bonham feature "Moby Dick" show that Zep was unafraid to venture into anything they damn well pleased, but the bluesy grit and primal hard-rock crunch of their feel throughout this collection reveals the pure visceral magic of which these '70s icons were capable.
Rolling Stone (12/25/03, p.112) - Included in Rolling Stone's "Top 10 Reissues of 2003" Rolling Stone (6/12/03, p.96) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...Captures Zep in prime swagger, fresh off their masterpiece, LED ZEPPELIN IV, with HOUSES OF THE HOLY just around the corner..."

      Bryter Layter CD
      by Nick Drake
    Our Price: $8.09 CD / $9.90 MP3
    Usually ships in 1-2 days
"At the Chime of a City Clock" finds Drake facing existential despair at every turn, despite an almost-lugubrious string arrangement. Perhaps the crucial moment of BRYTER LAYTER occurs on "Poor Boy," where female backing vocalists literally mock the singer's anguished laments. Clearly, for as much as Drake's heart and soul were bared in every note of his music, he was self-aware enough to know that his disillusioned-romantic view of the world was one that put him on the fringes of society. Of course, some 25 years later, his early-1970s work would find a much wider audience, even though the initial era of the sensitive singer/songwriter had long since passed.

Reissue of the late British folk icon's 1970 sophomore album.

After crafting a debut album full of beauteous, somber chamber-folk, Nick Drake pulled something of an about-face with the follow-up, BRYTER LAYTER. With a bright, sparkling production and orchestrations that occasionally border on Easy Listening, the framework is light and airy where FIVE LEAVES LEFT was dark and foreboding. The key, however, is that Drake's artfully expressed inner turmoil peeks through at every turn in the lyrics and in his understated-but-heartfelt vocal delivery.

Alternative Press (3/01, p.88) - "...With a voice paradoxically feather-light and grave, [one] of the most beautiful and melancholy albums ever recorded..." Mojo (Publisher) (7/00, p.99) - "...Certainly the most polished of his catalog....[It[ begins to suggest a whole other tableau of unexplored possibilities....God, how damn confident it all sounds. He knew how good he was..." NME (Magazine) (9/18/93, p.19) - Ranked #14 in NME's list of The Greatest Albums Of The '70s.

      Solid Air CD
      by John Martyn
    Our Price: $11.65 CD
    Usually ships in 1-2 days
He began as a folksy minstrel but seemed drawn to experimental, free form improvisation. Solid Air is where John Martyn's love affair with effects and echoplex became serious. The title track, dedicated to his close friend Nick Drake, became a eulogy, while the breezy "Over The Hill"--one of the greatest songs ever written about a train journey--is a feathery delight. "May You Never" and "Don't Want To Know" continued the simple, stoned ballad approach, although it is his interpretation of Skip James' "I'd Rather Be The Devil," totally reshaped with hypnotic shifts, tidal echoes, and a slurred growl, which broods over the whole album. A record that remains Martyn's youthful zenith.

CD edition of the British Folk singer/songwriter's landmark 1973 album. Solid Air has long since been considered by many to be his best album. John Martyn began as a folksy minstrel but seemed drawn to experimental, free form improvisation. Solid Air is where John Martyn's love affair with effects and echoplex became serious. The title track, dedicated to his close friend Nick Drake, became a eulogy, while the breezy "Over The Hill"--one of the greatest songs ever written about a train journey--is a feathery delight. A record that remains Martyn's youthful zenith.
Mojo (Publisher) (4/04, p.143) - "[A] sublime proto-chill out record on which the vaunted interplay between Martyn and double bassist Danny Thompson reached its folk-jazz zenith." Record Collector (magazine) (p.88) - 5 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he artist's command of his craft and spirit of experimentation resulted in a jaw-dropping collection..."
