      28 Greatest Hits CD
      by Grandpa Jones
    Our Price: $8.75 CD
    Usually ships in 1-2 days
    Liner Note Author: Chuck Young.
Until a box set of his King recordings appears, 28 Greatest Hits is the best available anthology of Grandpa Jones' classic early years.

Sounding like Uncle Dave Macon with an electric guitar, Grandpa Jones' King sides mixed old-timey novelties with hot Travis-picking (Merle Travis and Grandpa Jones were bandmates in the Brown's Ferry Four gospel quartet), and created an anachronistic style that kept pace with the times in its own way. Not every track is electrified, but Jones' unique update of mountain music is heard most clearly on tracks such as "Five-String Banjo Boogie" and the popular "Eight More Miles to Louisville."

While most of the songs are novelties, Jones plays it straight occasionally, as on "Tragic Romance" and the couple of sacred songs. Essential music from everybody's favorite Grandpa. ~ Greg Adams

      Clinch Mountain Treasures CD
      by Carter Family
    Our Price: $12.79 CD
    Usually ships in 1-2 days
The Carter Family: A.P. Carter, Sara Carter, Maybelle Carter.
Recorded in Chicago, Illinois in October, 1940. Includes liner notes by Bill Clifton.
    Digitally remastered by Mark Wilder.
    Recording information: Chicago, IL (10/03/1940).
    Illustrator: Fred Carlson.
    Unknown Contributor Role: Nick Shaffran.

As the title suggests, the songs are treasures, but they're not among the seminal group's best-known songs. Recorded for Okeh Records in Chicago in 1940, it captures the group's instrumentation and vocals at their most incisive. ~ Michael McCall

Along with Jimmie Rodgers, the Carter Family were country music's first big stars. Both acts' careers began with a 1927 RCA Victor open call recording session (documented on THE BRISTOL SESSIONS, released by the Country Music Foundation). From the day of that session until 1943, the original Carter Family--A.P., his wife Sara, and his sister-in-law Maybelle--remained extremely popular while honing a repertoire deep in gospel, sentimental songs of home, and heartbreak ballads. When Sara retired in 1943 the original group broke up, although Maybelle continued to perform with her daughters (among them June Carter Cash) as The Carter Sisters and Mother Maybelle.

The Carters' sound was defined by Maybelle's distinctive guitar style and the trio's odd but compelling three-part harmonies. CLINCH MOUNTAIN TREASURES, a collection of 1940 recordings made for the American Record Company, finds the group in good form, running through a set of 20 familiar numbers. While not the definitive Carter sides-- those were made for RCA Victor between 1927 and 1934--these tracks are all excellent examples of the Carters' art and will be enjoyed by all fans of old-time and traditional folk music.

Wabash Cannonball: The Very Best Of Roy Acuff CD
      by Roy Acuff
    Our Price: $7.99 CD
    Usually ships in 1-2 days
Roy Acuff is a pivotal figure, standing clearly at the crossroads of what had been termed hillbilly music and what would soon become modern country. No more than an adequate singer and fiddle player, Acuff still managed to hit just the right tone with his spare and simple songs, making him one of the first real stars of country music. This collection has his very biggest hits, but is way too short to be anything but a cursory introduction to Acuff's career. One of his most enduring songs, the maudlin "Wreck on the Highway," is listed here as "Wrecked on the Highway," which is bothersome, and conjures up a whole layer of irony that the song was never intended to support.

Better single-disc anthologies are easily available, so avoid this one. ~ Steve Leggett
Features ten tracks including these top selling hits 'Wabash Cannonball', 'Great Speckle Bird', and 'Mule Skinner Blues (Blue Yodel #3)'. Collectables 2004.

      1501 Miles Of Heaven CD
      by Eddie Dean
    Our Price: $10.85 CD
    Usually ships in 1-2 days
It's ironic that Texas native Eddie Dean moved to Chicago in the '30s. Many of his cowboy songs painted such vivid pictures of life in rural, small-town America, and Chicago is about as urban as it gets. But even when Dean was living in the Windy City, he was still a Texan to the core -- and his Texas roots assert themselves in a major way on 1501 Miles of Heaven.

This two-CD collection, which Allegro assembled for its Roots of Country label in 2001, is full of gems that are the essence of '40s and '50s cowboy music -- it doesn't get much more Western than "Rose of Santa Fe," "Red Sails in the Sunset," "Whoopie Ti Yi Yo," and "Oregon Trail." And Dean wasn't strictly a cowboy singer; he handles honky tonk impressively well on the tear-jerker "I'm a Stranger in My Home" and Ernest Tubb's "Walking the Floor Over You," while the 1948 classic "One Has My Name (The Other Has My Heart)" successfully combines country and pre-rock pop sensibilities. But as captivating as 1501 Miles of Heaven is, the collection isn't without its problems. Roots of Country fails to list either personnel or recording dates, and for serious collectors that type of laziness is infuriating. Further, many of Dean's definitive recordings are missing, including "On the Banks of the Old San Juan" and his most famous song, "I Dreamed of a Hillbilly Heaven."
"while 1501 Miles of Heaven is far from ideal, it does have a lot of good points and is worth acquiring for those interested in hearing more than Dean's most basic and essential work. ~ Alex Henderson

      Singing Brakeman CD - Import
      by Jimmie Rodgers
    Our Price: $174.15 CD
    Usually ships in 1-2 days
This box set includes a 60-page booklet with unpublished photos and extensive notes by Nolan Porterfield. The Singing Brakeman is a six-disc set that compiles every song that Jimmie Rodgers ever recorded. It covers the same ground as Rounder's eight-disc set, but Bear Family's set condenses the material into six CDs and adds a large booklet that features a thorough discography and biography.

Although it essentially has the same material, adding a few alternate takes that weren't on the Rounder series, The Singing Brakeman has a more scholarly approach -- the discs are designed not as a casual listening experience, but intense, concentrated listening.

In the end, however, it's neither superior or inferior to Rounder's series. No matter how they are presented, Rodgers' recordings constitute essential listening. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

On Border Radio Vol. 1 CD
      by Carter Family
    Our Price: $14.49 CD
    Usually ships in 1-2 days
About an hour of material taken from transcription discs recorded for broadcast on XET in Monterrey, Mexico in 1939. This isn't extraneous stuff by any means, containing their characteristic harmonies and well-executed guitar arrangements. It's of special interest to Carter Family fans, however, for the inclusion of much material that the group never recorded in their original lineup (although six were recorded by Sara and A.P. Carter with two of their children in the 1950s).

The demands of constant radio broadcasts necessitated a wide repertoire and varying approaches, and this collection also shows facets of the group that were underrepresented on record. These include instrumentals, several songs by A.P. on which he accompanies himself on guitar, and a few selections featuring the young daughters of various members of the Carter family (June Carter among them). ~ Richie Unterberger
culled from very rare acetate transcriptions....These acetates ...were intended to sound like live broadcasts and are looser in feel than the carefully crafted Victor sides.

On Border Radio Vol. 2 CD
      by Carter Family
    Our Price: $13.59 CD
    Usually ships in 1-2 days
ON BORDER RADIO is a collection of transcriptions the Carter Family, including the Carter children, made for Mexican radio station XET. Another dip into the surviving transcription discs of their 1939 XET broadcasts, which like the first volume presents the family in various contexts. The best cuts are generally those on which Sara and Maybelle handle the vocals; there are also ones by the young Carter Sisters, and a couple of instrumentals. The content isn't quite as strong on this second installment, and some of the songs are extremely short, coming to an end just when they seem to be approaching the heart of the matter. Of course, fans will still want it, because the performances and harmonies are good, and the sound quality isn't much different from the standards of officially released 1930s sessions. ~ Richie Unterberger
The Carter Family never commercially released many of the songs collected here, a fact that makes this set all the more interesting. A.P. Carter makes a rare solo appearance on "I Can Not Be Your Sweetheart"; his tremulous vocal is immensely appealing and almost worth the price of the CD by itself. Several spirited instrumentals such as "Red Wing" are also included here.

On Border Radio Vol. 3 CD
      by Carter Family
    Our Price: $13.59 CD
    Usually ships in 1-2 days
This third volume of the Tex-Mex border radio transcriptions the Carter Family recorded for rogue radio station XET is heavy on contributions from the extended family, though the original trio still contribute fine performances, notably on "The Story of Charlie and Nellie" and "Sitting on Top of the World." Perhaps due to broadcasting schedules some performances are somewhat more truncated than usual, but in the main this set includes many intriguing snippets, such as A.P. Carter's "My Virginia Rose," a rare example of the family patriarch accompanying himself on guitar.

The overall atmosphere on these transcriptions is relaxed, confident and casual. The Carters seem to be actually enjoying themselves, with none of their customary diffidence in front of the microphone. Jeanette Carter delivers a magical autoharp-accompanied version of the classic work song "Wade in the Water," and the entire family performs a rousing version of "Anchored in Love."
