Appointed "Mother of the Blues" during her '20s heyday, singer Ma Rainey was one of the best of the many
classic female blues singers of the period. An inspiration to the "Empress of the Blues," Bessie
Smith, Rainey was a Georgia native who was discovered in Chicago during the early '20s. While not
the possessor of a voice as powerful as Smith's, Rainey still cut a slew of strong sides featuring
a fine blend of country blues intensity and jazz-band sophistication. This excellent Yazoo collection
captures Rainey in her prime from 1924-1928. Backed by large combos and minimal guitar and piano tandems,
Rainey shines on such highlights as "Booze and Blues," "Shave 'Em Dry," and "Lucky Rock Blues." Topped
off with stellar contributions by blues and jazz luminaries like Don Redman, Coleman Hawkins, Kid Ory,
and Georgia Tom Dorsey, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom makes for an excellent introduction to blues singer's
small but potent catalog. ~ Stephen Cook

I Can't Be Satisfied: Early American Women Blues Singers Vol. 1: CD
by Compilation Disc
Our Price: $14.75 CD
Usually ships in 1-2 days
"...these songs have a vitality in the lyrics, an urge to say something, that has disappeared
almost completely in modern blues, where the emphasis has shifted so much to instrumental prowess..."
Personnel: Bertha Lee (vocals).
Audio Remasterer: Richard Nevins.
Liner Note Author: Don Kent.
Required listening, I Can't Be Satisfied, Vol. 1 is the "Country" volume in a two-part series of early American
blueswomen (Volume 2 is the "Town" volume). It is an absolutely essential compilation of early country blueswomen,
many of whom appear on virtually no other recordings. This definitive archival collection of underdocumented,
classic blueswomen and the better known bluesmen who performed with them includes such artists as Ruby Glaze
backed by husband Blind Willie McTell and Hattie Hart who performs here with the Memphis Jug Band.
Also heard are the only two available tracks by the intense Bertha Lee (Charlie Patton's wife during the
last years of his life), "Yellow Bee" and "Mind Reader Blues."
The sound quality of these 1920s recordings
varies from mild, surface noise to the intense hiss of Geeshie Wiley's "Eagles on a Half," but some listeners
will find that the power and rarity of this music outweighs such aesthetic inconveniences. If you want to hear
incredible, tough women sing country-blues, get this. ~ Joslyn Layne

Vocal Blues & Jazz: Complete Recorded Works CD
by Alberta Jones, Inez Richardson, Kitty Irvin
Our Price: $13.35 CD
Usually ships in 1-2 days
Personnel: Inez Marie Richardson, Alma Henderson, Alberta Jones (vocals); Eddie Lang, Lonnie Johnson (guitar);
Charlie Dixon (banjo); Don Redman (clarinet, alto saxophone); Edgar Campbell, Volly DeFaut (clarinet);
Otto Hardwick (alto saxophone); Elmer Chambers, Howard Scott (trumpet); Chink Johnson, George Brashear
(trombone); Ralph Escudero (tuba); Duke Ellington, Fletcher Henderson, Cordy Williams, Roy Banks,
Deloise Searcy, Walter Melrose (piano); Joseph "Kaiser" Marshall (drums).
Audio Remasterer: Gerhard Wessely.
The complete works of four 1920s singers (with the exception of two titles from Alma Henderson that
are available elsewhere) are on this interesting but not essential disc. None of the singers are all
that great. Inez Richardson's two titles from July 1921 are primarily of interest due to them being
recorded so early in the blues craze. Kitty Irvin fares better during her two titles from October 1924
(which includes the jazz standard "Copenhagen"), assisted by clarinetist Volly DeFaut and pianist Walter
Melrose. Alberta Jones is heard on 15 selections from eight different sessions. Most of her backup
musicians are unknown, but "Lucky Number Blues" and "I'm Gonna Put You Right in Jail" find her backed
by pianist Duke Ellington and altoist Otto Hardwicke in October 1926. Finally, there are four numbers
from Alma Henderson in 1927 (two previously unreleased) which are of greatest interest due to guitarists
Lonnie Johnson and Eddie Lang being on two selections apiece. The music is mostly listenable,
but not a must. ~ Scott Yanow

I Was Born Ruth Lee Jones, But I'm Singing As Dinah CD
by Dinah Washington
Our Price: $17.35 CD
Usually ships in 1-2 days
With her utterly distinctive vocal style, Dinah Washington was at home in many genres, yet
her blues performances hold a particular charm. While I WAS BORN RUTH LEE JONES, BUT I AM
SINGING AS DINAH contains a few standards (opener "Embraceable
You," for instance), most of these16 classic tracks are blues, including "Evil Gal Blues"
and "Ain't Nobody's Business But My Own."
It's hard to go wrong with this classic batch of
elegant yet gritty performances.
An astonishing collection and piece of blues history, this album caresses your ears with some
of the finest tunes by the Queen Of Blues who, despite her short life, managed to impose her
trademark vocal style on generations of blues makers. Featured here

Itinerary Of A Genius CD
by Bessie Smith
Our Price: $9.99 CD / MP3 $9.99
Usually ships in 1-2 days
Personnel: Bessie Smith (vocals); Lincoln M. Conaway, Bobby Johnson (guitar);
Charlie Dixon (banjo); William 'Buster' Bailey, Benny Goodman (clarinet); Garvin Bushell
(alto saxophone); Chu Berry, Coleman Hawkins, Greely Walton (tenor saxophone);
Frankie Newton (trumpet); Joe Smith , Ed Allen, Louis Armstrong (cornet); Jack Teagarden,
Jimmy Harrison, Joe Williams , Charlie Green (trombone); Cyrus St. Clair, Ralph Escudero
(tuba); Clarence Williams, Porter Gringer, Fletcher Henderson, James P. Johnson, Buck Washington
(piano); Fred Longshaw (organ); Billy Taylor (bass instrument); Her Blue Boys, Henderson's Hot Six,
The Bessemer Singers, Buck & His Band.
If you considered the total recorded output of Bessie Smith and tried to condense it into a single
22-track CD, you'd be hard-pressed to do a better selection job than on this premier release. The
Milan and Ryko labels have collaborated, and done well, to reissue these songs which have otherwise
been available in chronological extensia (check out the Classics label) from sources via the Columbia
Records family vaults, and through comprehensive and expensive boxed sets.
Each title speaks volumes
-- "Downhearted Blues," "St. Louis Blues," "Cakewalkin' Babies from Home," "Yellow Dog Blues,"
"Backwater Blues," "Send Me to the 'Lectric Chair," "A Good Man Is Hard to Find," "Empty Bed Blues,"
"Nobody Knows You When You're Down & Out," "On Revival Day," "I Need a Little Sugar in My Bowl," and
"Gimme a Pigfoot & a Bottle of Beer," -- all definitive classics, and a good bargain to find.
'Nuff said. ~ Michael G. Nastos
