Ring-a-ding-ding, you crazy cats! What could be cooler than an album that's got the essence of swingin' good times that made the Rat Pack so hip? Only not from a voice from beyond the grave, but from this smooth voiced jazzy vocalist? Nothing, that's what. Crisp production of a live big band helps make this album really move. And not content to just be a tribute act, it's filled with brand new original numbers that stay true to the style of yesteryear's classic songwriters like Jerome Kern, Rodgers & Hart, Hoagy Carmichael, and Cole Porter. And while the sound and style isn't groundbreaking, the songs and the moods they evoke are so much fun and so infectious, they basically make everyone in the room 25% cooler after hearing them. CD price: $12.97 / MP3 price: $9.99
Basically, this is an album of amazing songs, from one of America's foremost guitarists and singer/songwriters, who already has a stunning 50 solo albums to his credit. On this delightful new album, Keaggy takes on classic songs from The Beatles, Bob Dylan, James Taylor, and more. The thing is, he's right at home with this material, and we get the feeling these are really songs that he loves. With a voice quite similar to Paul McCartney, Keaggy is truly in his element with these songs. Old fans will love the instrumental tip of the hat to "What a Day" (his first album) at the end of "If Not for You", and will know guest vocalist Randy Stonehill from his work on Keaggy's "Sunday's Child" album from 1989. Other CD highlights include Nina Landis' breathy, passionate vocals on "Songbird", and the lush vibrato guitars on "All I Have to Do is Dream," Keaggy's duet with Jeremy Casella, who holds his own while harmonizing like a champ. Keaggy even includes an original composition, the lovely "You Have My Heart", which rests comfortably with the already familiar favorites. Having grown up listening to Phil Keaggy and the artists he covers here, its particularly pleasing to hear his graceful interpretations of these standards. CD price: $14.99
We've all heard female singer songwriters, and they tend to sound the same: nothing special, nothing terrible. Thankfully, Classics new EP isn't just another singer songwriter. Don't be fooled by the initial sound of acoustic guitar and voice; there's a whole lot more going on here. Each of the 3 songs is like a journey; they start at one point and as they go along, we're greeted by different sounds and attractions: here's a male harmony, there's an intricate, danceable drum machine beat, here's a gliding bass line, there's an occasional nuanced keyboard part. Despite the great eclectism of sounds and textures in their songs, it's Elsa Gernandt's strong, sometimes breathy voice (think Imogen Heap) that really sells them. As a whole, it becomes clear that these aren't just songs, they're compositions with a lot of thought and care going into each one. And it's a real pleasure to listen to. Good filmic music will generally fill you with a sense of place. But rarely does it invite the listener to inhabit several worlds at once. Toronto composer Edgardo Moreno has created an instrumental album that is comfortable with its own contradictions and colliding influences. The sound is cold and glacial, and yet it steams with the warmth of a barren desert expanse. It pulses like the buzzing streets that twist beneath a city of glass and neon, and yet it feels as placid and serene as a summer picnic in the forest of dreams. Each piece centers on trance inducing acoustic guitar patterns. But the meditative effect is tempered by tasteful counterpoint of syncopated, minimalist electric guitar figures that would make Steve Reich and Philip Glass proud. Moreno also introduces enough varied textures and instruments (Hawaiian slide and slack key guitar, charango arpeggios, synth and cymbal swells, coily Afro-Pop guitar tones, and miniature, crystalline electro-beats) to lend an exploratory feel to these restrained tunes. “Travelling Guitars” is similar to the Eno/Byrne masterpiece “My Life in the Bush of Ghosts” in that they are both imaginary soundtracks with sweeping cinematic feel, but without having to subordinate the music to any moving images. Instead, you’re left to create the movie in your mind. CD price: $12.97 / MP3 price: $10.00
Managing to be extremely personal without saying a word, this ten song collection of solo piano pieces is really an accomplishment for this young man. By shaking off traditions and branching out ever so slightly, he's able to really extract palpable warmth and intimacy from the keys, slyly going in directions while deep in the middle of a song that weren't even hinted at when it began. The opening track, "Ripples," starts the album off on a bright note, washing over with lush progressions that are brought to an apex then cooled down. Songs like "Breathe Deep" and "Broken" take a more serious tone, beginning with slight melodies and eventually building to a controlled climax. While it's instrumental, this isn't "background music." These are compositions with emotional depth and vision, not to mention a quality recording that makes it all the more effective. CD price: $12.97 / MP3 price: $9.99
